Description

Jam 2%, 1929.
L. R. FOLLIARD SAFETY RAZOR Filed July 6, 1927 Patented Jan. 29, 1929.
UNITED STATES LEO n. FOLALIARD, or rnonmx, ARIZONA.
SAFETY RAZOR.
Application filed July 6,
The present invention is directed to improvements in safety razors.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character so constructed that the blade can be held positively in fixed position upon the guard for shaving purposes and released when it is desired to strop the blade.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel form of holder for the blade, the construction being such that the blade can be readily removed and replaced, and will be held firmly against slipping when engaged in the holder.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional View.
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the clamping plate.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary detail sec tional view through the blade holder.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the handle to which is detachably secured the head plate 2, said plate having spaced vertically disposed side plates 3, carried thereby, and in which are journaled outer rollers 1 and an intermediate roller 5.
To the outer ends of the roller 5 are secured the arms 6 which have secured to their outer ends a blade holder 7 which includes a base bar 8, said bar having carried thereby resilient sheet metal plates 9 and 10, the plate 10 having an inwardly struck resilient lug 11 disposed centrally thereof, the purpose of which will be later explained.
The blade 12 has its inner edge provided with a slot 13 and resultant tongue 14 having its free end beveled, as at 15. It will thus be seen that a blade can be slid between the plates 9 and 10 whereupon the'lug 11 will ride over the beveled end of the tongue, after which the lug will enter the slot 13 to firmly hold the blade in place, as clearly shown in Figure 5 of the drawing.
The head plate 2 terminates at one edge in a guard plate 16, in which are formed openings 17, said plate having the usual guard fingers 18.
In order to hold the blade in a shaving position upon the guard plate 16 a clamping plate 19 is provided and has extending from its forward corners fingers 20 having their outer ends terminating in hooks 21 which are adapted to engage over the forward edge of the guard plate and with the forward 1927. corners of the blade 12 to hold the same in place. The plate 19 has its rear corners provided with hooks 22 which pass through the openings 17 of the guard plate and yieldably engage the bar 8 of the blade holder, there being an ear 23 carried by the plate 19 to facilitate the removal or replacement of the same upon the guard plate.
lVhen it is desired to strop the razor blade the clamping plate is removed from the blade holder and the strop 24: is engaged with the rollers 4 and 5, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, in order that the handle 1 may be moved backwardly and forwardly relative to the strop so that the blade holder 7 will be rocked to permit the edge of the blade to engage the strop.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A safety razor comprising a head plate, a guard plate carried thereby, arms pivotally connected with the head plate, a blade holder fixed to the arms, said blade holder having a resilient lug carried thereby, a blade engaged with the holder and having a slot and resultant tongue engaged by the lug, and a clamping plate for holding the blade holder fixed upon the guard plate.
2. A safety razor comprising a head plate, a guard plate carried thereby, spaced side plates carried by the head plate, rollers journaled in the side plates, arms fixed to the journals of one of the rollers for movement therewith, a bar fixed to the outer ends of the arms, a blade holder comprising a pair of spaced plates fixed to the bar, one of said plates having a resilient lug carried thereby, a blade having a slot and resultant tongue for engagement between the last named plates, said tongue being engaged by the resilient lug, and a resilient plate removably engaged with the guard plate for holding the blade and holder fixed upon the guard plate.
3. A safety razor comprising a head plate, a pair of arms pivotally connected with said head plate, said head plate having a guard plate provided with openings, a blade holder fixed to the arm and including a bar, a blade removably engaged with the holder, a clamping plate having hooks carried thereby for engaging, respectively, the blade and bar, certain of the hooks being passed through the openings in the guard plate.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
