Description
I r J. A. H. .G ASTONGUAY CONSTRUCT ION OF A SAFETY RAZOR BLADE SHARPENING TOOL Filed Aug 18, 1924 INVENTOR A'Fl'QRNEY Patented Sept. 22, 1925.
UNITED STATES JOSEPH ARTHUR HENRY GASTONGUAY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CONSTRUCTION OF A SAFETY-RAZOR-BLADE-SHARPENING TOOL.
Application filed August 18, 1924. Serial No. 732,870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH ARTHUR HENRY GASTONGUAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in the Construction of a SafetyRazor-Blade-Sharpening Tool, of which the following is a specification, the same being a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
In the drawings, illustrative of embodiments of the invention, which accompany and form a part of this specification,
Figure 1 represents an article constructed according to my invention;
Figure 2 is a view in section taken on the line 2-2, Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional detail view on the line 33, Figure 1;
Figures at and 5 are elevations of other articles in which the invention is embodied, Figure 4 being partly broken away to more clearly show the clamping blades.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes a onepiece sheet metal frame or body portion to contain a safety razor blade and also adapted to serve as a handle and comprising a longitudinally extending open mouth 2 and a therebelow narrower V-shaped channel 3 formed at the bottom part thereof with one or more slots 4:.
I pivot to the said frame, and preferably at or about the centre thereof, as by a pivot 5 consisting of an eyelet or grommet or by a rivet 5, a pair of resilient movable clamping blades or jaws 6 each being provided with a series of safety razor blade holding and fastening devices comprising inwardly extending projections, as 7, and preferably alternately disposed orifices, as 8, the projections on each clamping blade registering with and engaging oppositely disposed orifices in the other clamping blade. The numher and position of these projections and orifices may be varied according to the razor blade to be sharpened, and the said safety razor blade fastening devices are preferably so arranged as to accommodate safety razor blades of various makes in a single pair of clamping blades.
The said projecting portions 7 of the clamping blades which extend through the orifices 8 may be also entered into the intermediate registering openings 12 of the safety razor blade 12. By :now holding the free ends of the clamping blades together in a closed position while grasping the safety razor blade and reentering the same in the open mouth 2 and forcing them into the channel 3 in alignment with the same, the exposed edge of the safety razor blade will extend through a slot 4 and the clamping blades and the safety razor blade will be firmly held in an operative position in the said narrow channel.
After the edge of the safety razor blade has been sharpened, by moving the clamp ing blades in a semi-circular direction the other edge of the safety razor blade will extend through the other slot 4 and may thus be readily sharpened. The safety razor blade may be removed by passing the clamping blades out of the open mouth 2 until they are approximately at a right angle to the same, at which time the resiliency of the said blades will cause the same to open sufficiently to easily take off the safety razor blade.
For convenience in operating my device the ends of the clamping blades may extend from the frame or body and may be formed with rounding extremities 9 or recessed ends 10 to facilitate the operation thereof. The frame may also be formed with a stop 11 to prevent the hand from coming too near the safety razor blade which is held in operative position not only by the clamping blades 6 but also by the enclosing narrow channel 3. 7
What I claim as my invention is In a device of the class described, a body portion made of a single piece of resilient metal open at the rear thereof to form two members and slotted at the front edge, the rear of the body being practically circular in cross section and then converging toward the front edge, a pair of clamping members to carry the razor blade extending beyond and pivoted within the body and adapted to be held in operative position by the said converging edges at a distance from the front edge, the said holding properties being increased by the tension exerted by the body members when grasped by the hand, the body being extended outwardly away from the razor blade to serve as a handle.
JOSEPH ARTHUR HENRY GASTONQUAY,
