SANITARYy COMBINED cusrrnon;
Applicationy 1ed.... 0ctober 27, 1927. Serial No. 229,226.
This invention relates to afcombined fcuspidor and ash tray, and among the vobjects of the invention are to provide a novel, san- 1 itary and convenient means of coveringand uncovering the cuspidorA `and holding the cover Inopen position; to provide an ash tray, anda compartmentfor utensils `-for 4cleaning the cuspidor.
AThese objects,-.and other vadvantageous ends which will befdescribed hereinafter, I attain ,in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in.
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a device embodying the improvement,
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the device with the cover in an open position,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2, 1
'Figure 4 is a plan View,
Figure 5 is 'a sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Figure 1, Y
Figure 6 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 66 of' Figure 1.
Figure 7 is an enlargedfragmentary sectional elevation showing means for holding the cover in an open position, and Y Figure 8 is aview similarto Figure 6, showing a modification. 'v
In the drawings, 8 is a base in the form of a shallow box preferablypenlarging upwardly with its back 9 higher' than its sides and front. The box is provided with a rearwardly inclined partition `10, extending transversely between the sides with its upper edge flushwith the upper edges of thev sides and front.
A horizontal shelf 11 divides the box in-` to an upper compartment 12 and a lower compartment 13. kThe upper compartment may serve as a cuspidor, but 'preferably serves asa receptacle for a removable con-y tainer 14 which serves as the cuspidor. The front of the box is provided with an opening 15 below the shelf to receive a drawer! 16 adapted to slide in the lower compartment.
A space is formed between back 9 and par-v 17, and Vextends overl thel space.' above referred to, but leaves a space between its zforward edge and partition 10.
A cover 20 is'hinged near its rear end,
to the top yof partition 10,l as indicatedat 21, and the short end or heel extends into the space between partition lO'andVback 9,
while its longer end is adapted to' `close against the upper surfaces of the walls ofi compartment 12. A packing 22, of rubber or other material, to form aly cush,1on, 1sse# cured to saidl surfaces andforms` a' tight `joint between'the bottom of thecover and the compartment when thecover is closed.
The innervend of the cover is ofreduced width, being cut-out at the corner as indicated at 23, to extend between side strips 17.
The short end of the cover is provided with a concavity 24 and the transverse strip 19 has an opening 25 which registers withA the concavity when the cover is closed.
A hollow upright or housing 26, prefer-y ably'of rectangular cross section,is secured f in a base 27 and this base is detachably secured to strip 19 over opening/25. A plunger 28,701 rectangular cross section, is slidably mounted in the corresponding passage of upright 26 and has a reduced lower end ,t i 29. A bar 30 is pivoted at 31 tothe reduced end 29 and has a reduced upper end 32 projecting beyond the pvot. The lower end of section 30 is beveled, as indicated at 33 and ,p provided with a pin 34 extending into the concavity 24 and cover 20.
The upper end of-upright 26 is tapered and a bracket 35 is bent in shape to fit thereon and is provided with a horizontal ring support 36 for an ash tray 37.
The drawer 16, affords a convenient re-V ceptacle for utensils, for cleaning the cuspidor, disinfectant, etc.
vWith the cover closed, the plunger will be in its high position with a major part of pivoted section 30 within the hollow upright or housing and its pin contacting with the cover. By pressing the plunger downward until the heel only of the pivoted section remains in the housing, the cover will be opened and, upon release of pressure upon the plunger, will close by its own weight. By pressing the plunger downward until the pivoted section is clear of the housing, the cover will be swung to open position and the pivoted section swung to an angle with i y plungerpart 28.` Upon release of pressureon the plunger, therednced beveled end 252i of thepivotedfsection 30` will engage the under surface `of strip v19 and holdv the coverV in `open "osition. y The locking engagement of the pivoted `section is suicient to hold the V'cover open but niay be released by a lifting` pressnreon the plunger. y
