'lllhe present invention relates to tops for soda fountainv cabinets and the hire. The present top construction is of lthe sliding type so as to cover a cabinet with two compart-- and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various inechanicalforms in which the principle of the invention may be used.

rlhc present covei1 is adapted to be used on soda fountain cabinets of the usual type comprising a rectangular structure having side walls 1 and end walls 2 ot considerable ythickness and properly insulated and have rather wide upper surfaces 3. Ilihe cabinet may be divided into two separate compartments by a center partition or may be left as a single compartment as shown.
The cover consists of a box or casing 5 formed of suitable sheet metal of non-rusting material, this box having a bottom portion 6 filled with insulating material 7 and a pocket- 8. Near the upper edge, the side Walls 9 are bent out as at 10 and then up as at 11 to form a flange 12 around three vsides of the cover and guid-eways 13 at the top of the pocket. The top 14 of the box has its forward edge turned up and rebent along itself to form a stilfening lange 15 to prevent buckling or bending.-
The other cover portion consists of a box 2Q of sheet metal filled with insulating mate rial and provided with a Bange 21 around three sides, this ange 21 being of a thickness to lit within the guideways 13 so that this cover halll 2O may telescope in the cover halt llach cover halt' is provided with a knob or handle 25 for ease in handling and moving. 'l'he llanges 2l of the telescoping cover halt 2O are wide enough to overlap the upper surfaces 3 of thefcabinet Walls as best shown in Fig. 1 and the upper surfaces of the two cover halves are substantially level, the difference in height being only the thickness of the ton 14 ot the cover half 5. l
rlo aid in holding the cover halt` 2O in its closed position, it is provided on its lower edge with a locking clip 30 of angle section, which is. adapted to engage over a comple@ nientary clip 3l secured t'o the cabinet wall. 'llo release the clips, it is only necessary to raise the cover halt 20 slightly which is the normal action in grasping its handle, after which the half 20 may bestelescoped into the halt' 5 to open the right hand halt of the cabinet.
The cover halves lit the cabinet fairly snugly, the halt 5 litting rather tightly as shown in Fig. 3 While the half 20 is looser as shown in Fig. 4 to allow for its own movement into the half 5 Where it lits so as to just be easily movable as best shown in Fig. 5.
In Fig. 6, the same covers are shown as applied to a modilied form of cabinet construction in which an angle iron 40 is mounted along the inner edges of the cabinet to provide a raised flange or shoulder 41 thereon to prevent spilled liquid from dripping into the cabinet compartment.
|lfhe present typeof sliding cover may be removed as a telescoped unit of halt size thus taking up a minimum space. lt is easily moved to telescope in either direct-ion so as to y open either half of the cabinet and it provides a substantially flush upper surface above the level of the top of the cabinet. lt allows the interior Walls of the cabinet to be kept free of shoulders or guideways for the covers. As the cover overlaps the entire four walls of the cabinet, it completely closes the same and anything dropping or spilling on the cover halves may be readily wiped oft' without danger of forcing it into the cabinet proper.
Both cover halves are properly insulated,
each being provided witha heavy insulated bottom portion. The. covers are inexpensive in construction as they may be made of sheet metal sections which can be Welded together so as to present watertight boxes if desired. The rebent edge of the pocket stiffens the top so that the top is not easily bent, thus reducing the pocket size or binding the two cover together.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided thc means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of' such stated means be einployed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1. In a sliding top for cabinets, the coin.- bination of a half cover provided with an insulated box at the bottom, the sides of said cover beinfr extended upwardly from said ,half cover being adapted to telescope into said first half cover with its flanges in the pocket flanges, said two half covers being adapted in their extended position to have their flanges rest on the cabinet top and overlap the compartment opening on every side so as to completely close the compartment.
2. In a sliding top for cabinets, the combination of a half cover provided with an insulated box at the bottom, the sides of said cover being extended upwardly from said box and then outwardly and upwardly to form a flanged pocket above said box, a top for said half cover rigidly secured to said sides, and a second half cover comprising an insulated box slightly narrower than said first half cover and provided near its Joop with laterally projecting flanges, said second cover half being. adapted to telescope into said first half cover with its flanges in the ocket flanges, said two half covers being a a ted in their extended position to have t eir flanges rest on the cabinet top and overlap the compartment opening on every side so as to completely close the compartment, a handle mounted on each cover half, the handle on said telescoping second half cover being so positioned as to limit the telescoping movement.
3. In a sliding top for cabinets, the combination of a half cover provided with an insulted box at the bottom, the sides of said cover being extended upwardly from said box and then outwardly and upwardly to form a. flanged pocket above said box, a top for said half cover rigidly secured to said sides, the forward edge of the top being turned upwardly and rebent on itself to form a stifl'ening'flange across the mouth of the pocket, anda second half cover comprising an insulated box slightly narrower than said rst half cover and provided near its top with laterally projecting flanges, said seeond cover half being adapted to telescope into said first half cover with i'ts flanges in the pocket flanges, said two half covers being adapted in their extended position to have their flanges rest on the cabinet top and overlap the compartment opening on every side so as to completely close the compartment, a handle mounted on each half cover, the handle on said telescoping second half cover being so positioned as to limit the telescoping movement.
