Box COVER.
Application filed February 7, 1927. Serial No. 166,402..
My invention relates to boxes such as are used for containing candy or other merchandise which it is desired to put before the public in attractive containers.
My invention consists particularly in the means for decorating boxes of this nature and is particularly applicable to paper boxes such as are in general use in selling candy.
Briefly, my invention consists in the application of a handkerchief to the cover of a box in such a manner that the handkerchief and the paper cover sheet of the box contrast with each other and cooperateto form a design, one component of which, the handkerchief, may be easily removed by the receiver of the box and used in the ordinary Way, the box cover proper being unmarred by the removal of the handkerchief and maintaining an attractive appearance. l
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a selected embodiment of my invention-- a Figure 1 is a top view of a box having a lace handkerchief applied thereto, a portion of the handkerchief being cut away to illustrate more or less diagrammatically the surface of the paper cover sheet of the box lid.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical section through one side of the box.
The box is formed in the usual manner and includes a bottom portion l and a top portion 2, the latter having a cover sheet 8 Which may be of any desired color or designy but preferably is of metal foil or has a lustrous appearance and, if not a solid color, has a small all-over design which adapts it to serve as a background for the completed design.
The box is shown as beingl of square outline and a square handkerchief comprising a solid central portion 4 with a Wide lace border 5 is applied flatly to the box cover, the length and Width of the handkerchief preferably being the same as the corresponding dimensions of thebox.
A ribbon 6 extends over the handkerchief with its ends secured to the edges of the box in an unobtrusive manner and the ribbon forms means for detachably securing the handkerchief to the box during the display of the box andy its merchandise and for-as long a period thereafter as the recipient may desire. The handkerchief may be easily slipped from beneath the ribbon when desired Without affecting the finish of the handkerchief or of the cover or of the ribbon in any Way and the box will still be attractive although the handkerchief may be removed. n
By means of the arrangement described, many rich and attractive combination designs may be produced, an example being where a cover sheet of gold color is used as a base over which `a handkerchief having an ecrucolored lace border is applied and secured in place by a gold-colored ribbon. The sheen of the paper viewed through the lace'mesh and around the figures creates an effect which cannot be produced by ordinary lithographing or other means of treating the paper cover.
Obviously many other colored combinations are possible. It will be understood that the shape of the box and the provision of a handkerchief With the same dimensions as the box cover are not essential features of my invention in its broadest form, nor is it essential that the article applied to the box be a handkerchief, as oblong or round boxes may be decorated with other objects of lace, such as doilies, etc., Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. An element of a mercantile package comprising a box lid having an outside sheet of lustrous material, and a lace handkerchief detachably secured to said sheet and extending flatly over the same so that its lace is set off by said sheet.
2. An element 'of a mercantile package comprising a decorative box lid, and a covering therefor of open textile material with solid figures and applied flat-ly over said lid and having an outline corresponding to the outline of said lid, said lid and covering being of contrasting appearance and combining to form a component design in Which the coloring of said lid forms a back ground for the mesh and figure of said covering.
. 3. An element of a mercantile package comprising a box lid having a cover sheet co1- ored'or figured to form an attractive appearance, a lace handkerchief applied atly to and over substantially all of said sheet and g forming therewith a component design, and with a. component design, and an ornamental 10 means detachably holding said handkerchief ribbon permanently secured to said lid against said cover sheet, and detachably holding said handkerchief 4. An element of afrnercantilepackagecomn againstsaicl cover sheet, said handkerchief prising a box lid having a fiat cover sheet oolbeing removable from said sheet and ribbon ored or figured to form an attractive appear- Without afecting the same. 15 ance in itself, a lace handkerchief` applied In testimony Wherof I hereunto affix my flatly over said cover sheet and substantially signature this 3rd day of February, 1927. oo-eXtensive therewith and forming there- Y FRANK J. SCHLEICHER.
