NITED STATES PATENT IMPROVEMENT IN VISES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,486, dated November 2, 1875; application led September 25, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER O. H. P. SEHORN, of Murfreesborough, Rutherford county, Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Vise, of which the following is a speciiication:

The Vobject ot my invention is to furnish an improved vise, i of simple and durable construction, without the use of screw-threads, which are soon worn out; and the invention consists of spring-jaws with a cross-bar hooking over a cam-shaped flange of a set-screw, by which the jaws are'instantly and rigidly adjusted.
In the drawing, A represents the springjaws of my improved vise, which branch out from a strong stock or handle. A square crossbar, B, connects the jaws by passing through guide-perforations of the same. The larger or headed end of the cross-bar bears, by a washer, ci, on one jaw A, while the other recessed and hook-shaped end b projects over the inclined circumferential flange or cam, d,
of a thumb-nut, C, and acts thereby on the other jaw A. The thumb-nut G is applied to the jaw by a central screw-pin, and the nut turns for adjusting the jaws.
The jaws A are entirely open when the crossbar is at the lowest part ofthe cam, and close gradually on the objects to be clamped by turning the thumb nut, so that the rise of' the cam acts on the cross-bar and the aws.
The adjustment and release of t e jaws are Y accomplished in an instant, and the vise, by its substantial and durable construction, is less liable to wear and injury.
Having th us described rnyinventi on, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters lPatent- A vise made of springja-ws A, adjusted by cross-bar connecting with hooked bearing on an inclined circumferential ange or cam of a thumb-nut applied to one ofthe jaws, constructed and operating substantially as specitied.
