DEVICE FOR HOLDING AND APPLYING COSMETICS AND THE LIKE.

Application filed August 3, 1926, Serial No. 126,821, and in Austria May 5, 1926.

This invention relates to a device for holding tubular articles, particularly, toilet preparations and cosmetics in stick form, such as lipsticks, color, pencils, soap, and the like. It is an object of this invention to provide a device in which the article may be normally kept within a container, but extended from the container in a practical form for use, by the removal of the cover.

It is a further object to produce a device of the character described, in which the closed container may be opened and the prep aration exposed for use, and in which it may be also used and again enclosed within the container; by the manipulation of one hand.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a device in which such preparations, particularly when they are somewhat soft and liable to be softened by heat, may be caused to project from a container only so far as is necessary to permit their use and retained in that position during use, without liability of being unduly softened by contact of the unused portion with the fingers.

It is a further object to produce a container of the character described, in which the removal of the lid will automatically cause the projection of the article, and in which, after use, the lid will be guided into its position to close the container.

Within the scope of this invention the tubular support may be made substantially of the same diameter as the bore of the casing, so that it slides freely therein and is guided thereby, and this support is adapted to grasp the base of the stick without extending upwardly on the sides thereof. The cap may be arranged, moreover, so as to be guided for movement along the axis of the tube during the withdrawing and replacing operation and snaps readily into this axial position at either end of the casing. The cap retaining means is, moreover, preferably pivotally connected to the support exterior to the tube, so that the removal of the cap by axi'almovement automatically draws the article from the easing and thereafter, if the cap be swung to an axial position at the other end of the easing, the amount of protrusion of the article may be determined by the axial movement of the cap. 7

Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.

According to this present invention the lid of the holder is articulated to the plunger member or the like which is guided inside the holder, so that during the removal of the lid, the article is gradually drawn out of the holder, and when the article is in position for use the lid can be swung out of the way. In a preferred e1nbodin'1ent,-the lid and plunger are connected by means of an arm which can be folded over the holder when the article is in position for use, and is thereby kept out of the way.

In order more clearly to understand the invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings which illustrate by way of example two typical embodiments thereof, for use with a lipstick, and in which:

Fig. 5 is a cross section taken through Fig. 1 at substantially the point where "the pins connect with the cosmetic.

In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, the holder consists, for example, of a tube 1, closed at one end and provided with a longitudinal slot 2 in diametrically opposite positions-on each side. Adjustably mounted inside the tube 1 is-a clip 3 (plunger), which forms the carrier for the lipstick 4 or the like inserted therein. The tube 1 is closed by a lid 7, in the form of a cap, which is articulated to the clip 3 by means of a bow arm 6, the connection being effected by means of pins 5 guided in the slots 2 of the tube 1. In order to use the lipstick, the cap 7 is drawn upwards into the position shown in Fig, 2 and the how 6 ghere shown by dotted lines) is swung down si eways so that it can serve as a handle for gradually drawing out the lipstick. When the latter is being used, the how can also be folded into the position shown in Fig. 3, in which the tube 1 lies inside the bow 6, and the cap 7 can be pushed over the bottom of the tube. In a practical manner, it is desirable that the cap be constrained to move in an axial direction when opposite either end of the tube, so that it may be readily brought into place with one hand, and to this end, the container and the arms are preferably mutually so shaped as to be resiliently held in a position to be guided for relative axial movement, this snap into place.

The holder tube, which is also adapted for use as an applying device, may be of anyde sired cross sectional shape, round, oval, or angular.

By reason of the fact that the connection between the cap and the cosmeticsu'pport is outside of the container, thecosmeti support inay be moved to protrude the cosmetic varying amounts, whilethecapis removed, and moreover, the arms which connectcthe cap with the support are in no danger of abrading the cosmeticeither to soilthe fingers or to clog the mechanism. Moreover, when thecap 1s in place the arms cooperate with the cap completely'to close the mechanism by protecting the slot. Thus the entrance of dust "or other foreign matter into the interior of the container is precluded. Moreover, by reason of the fact that the cap is rigid upon the arms the cap itself isguided into position to close the container when the arms are swung into alignment with the tube. A. holder for cosmetic, a cosmetic support adjustably movable in the holder, and a cover connected to said holder for movement to either end of the holder, said support operatively connected to the cover for being, adjusted by. movements of said cover irrespective of the position of the cover. l 2. A holder for cosmetic, a cosmetic support adjustably movable in the holder, and a cover, having connection to said holder for movement outside theholder to either end of the latter and having support-adjusting movement at either end, said holder having an aperture'in its side wall, said connection including a cover-carrying arm coupled to said support through said aperture for pivotal movement relative to said support, and of a length permitting ad'ustment of said support to one of either 0 the ends of the holder when the cover is at the other end, said arm being resilient and co-active with the holder to close said aperture when the cover is closed.

8. A holder for cosmetic including, in combin ation a tube having an opening and a longitudinal slot a cosmetic support adjustably movable longitudinallyin the tube, a cover,

7 longitudinally and transversely movable to open and close the cosmetic opening in the tube, having an arm connected through said slot to said support, adapted to close said slot when the cover is closed.

9. A holder comprising a holder tube having a slot in aside wall, a carrier member telescoping within said holder tube, a cover member having a device extending through said slot into engagement with sa1d carrier member for operating said carrier member.

10. A holder for stick material comprising a holder tube havin a slot in each side, a carrier member to escoping within said holder tube, a cover member having a cap and a pair of projecting arms straddling and fitting said holder tube, said holder tube and arms being curved in cross section, and pivot as a closure for said slot when-said holder is closed.

12. A holder comprising a holder tube, a carrier member telescoping within said holder tube, a cover member having an arm disposed outside said holder tube, and means for connecting said arm and carrier member.

13. In a cosmetic stick container, in combination, an elongated casing open at one end and closed at the other end and havin longitudinal slots in opposite sides thereo a cover capable of placementover the casing opening, two oppositely disposed legs carried by the cover and exterior of the casing, a cosmetic stick carrier within the oasin and longitudinally movable therein an pivotal means passing through the casing slots and connecting the legs with the stick carrier.
