In order to give an understanding of the invention 1' haveillustrated in the drawings a selected embodimentthereot which will now be described after which the novel feaclaims.

M The drawings show the invention as it mightbeapplied for looking a cover. or closure to a box or other receptacle, but I desire to state that the invention is capable of a great variety of uses wherever it is desired to lock two elements together.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a box or receptacle having an opening 2, and 3 is a cover, door or closure for the opening. This cover may be hinged to the box and thus be permanently connected thereto or may be entirely removable from the box as desired.
In the construction shown, which, however, is merely for illustrative purposes, the lower end of the cover is formed with a lip 4 to engage under a flange 5 situated at one end of the opening 2 thus holding the lower end of the cover in place. The box is also shown as having ribs 6 along its sides on which the side edges of the cover 3 rest.
My improved lock is shown as used for locking the upper endof the cover 3 to the box. It comprises two rotatable locking pointed out in the appended members, one of which is shown at 7 and is carried by the box and the other of which is shown at 8 and is carried by the cover, together with two fingers 9 and 10 which 00- operate with said locking members, one of thefingers, the finger 9, being carried by the cover and co-operating with the locking member 7 and the other finger, the finger 10, being carried by the box and co operating with the locking member 8. i
The locking member 7 is cup-shaped and is provided with the depending flange 11 provided with a slot 12. This locking member is mounted on a stud 13 which extends through the top of the box and is provided on its exposed end with a thumb piece 14 by which it may be turned. This thumb piece has suitable numbers, letters or other identifying marks on it to assist in properly setting it, as will be presently described. When the cover is locked in place the finger 9 on the cover is located behind the flange 11, as seenin Fig. 4.
The locking member 8 on the cover is in the form of a disk which is mounted on a stud 15 that extends through the cover, said stud being journalled at its inner end in a plate 16 that is spaced from the cover but attached thereto. The finger 9 on the cover is shown as being formed on this plate 16 although it might have any other suitable construction. The locking member 8 is locatedbetween the plate 16 and the cover 3.
The stud 15 extends through the cover and is formed onits outer exposed end with a thumb piece 17 by which the locking mem her 8 may be turned. This disk is provided on its [periphery with numbers, letters or other identifying marks to assist in preperly adjusting the disk, The locking member '8 is formed with a slot 18 and said member co-operates with the depending finger 10 formed on the box. When the cover is locked this finger is located between the locking disk 8 and the cover.
Thus normally when the lock is in operation the finger 9 on the cover is situated behind the flange 11-01? the locking member 7 and the finger 10 on the box is situated be tween the locking member 8 and the cover. The cover is thus doubly locked in place by the two locking members which, it will be noted, are mounted to rotate about axes at right angles to each other.
In order to unlock the box the thumb piece 14 is turned into a position to bring the slot 12 in alignment with the finger 9 on the cover and the thumb piece 17 is also turned so as to bring the locking member 8 into a position in which the slot'lS therein is in alignment with the finger 10. I/Vhen this has been done then the upper end of the cover may be swung outwardly away from the box thus exposing the contents thereof a seen in dotted lines, Fig. 4. I
In order to open the box it is necessary for one to know the proper combination, that is, to know the position in which to turn each of the thumb pieces 14 and 1? in order to align the slots 12 and 18 with the fingers 9 and 10.
It will be noted that one feature of the invention resides in having the two locking members, one carried by each'of the two elements' to be locked together and each rotatable about an axis at right angles to that 01"- the other, together with the two fingers, one carried by each of t e said'two elements to be locked together and which cooperate with the locking members to .lock'the closure in place.
When the cover is to be locked it is only necessary to have the locking members properlyadjusted so that when the cover is closed the fingers 9 and 10 will pass through the slots 12 and 18 after which the thumb pieces may be actuated to upset the combination.
The fingers 10 and 9 are shown as located in line with each other but the upper end ot the finger 9 is slightly below the lower end of the finger 10 so that when the c ver is opened or closed the finger'9 canswing underneath the finger 10 without interfering.
My improved lock is relatively simple but is efiectivein operation.
I claim: H
1. In a combination lock, the combination with two elements to be locked together, of a rotary locking member carried by each ele ment, said locking members being rotatable about axes at right angles to each other, and a finger on each element co-operating with the rotatable locking member onthe other ele- 'ment to lock said members together? 2. In a combination lock, the combination with two elements to be locked together, a
locking member rotatably carried by each element, said locking members being rotatable about axes at right anglesto each other, a finger on each element which is located behind the locking member on the other element, each locking member having a slot which may be brought into ister with the corresponding finger by rotating said locking member.
3. The combination with a box having an opening, of a closure-thereof, a locking mem ber rotatably carried by the box and having an annular flange extending parallel to the axis of rotation, a second locking member rot-atably mounted on the inside of the closure to turn about an axis at right angles to that of the flanged locking member, a. finger on the cover situated behind the flange of the first-named locking member, a second finger on theboxlocated behind the second-mentioned locking member and the cover, each locking member having a slot through which the finger may passwhen the cover is being opened or closed, and means on the outside of the cover and box forrotating the locking members.
4. The combination with a box having an opening, of a closure therefor, a plate secured to the inside of the closure but spaced therefrom, a stud journalled in said plate and closure and extending through the latter, a locking member mounted on the stud, a finger carried by the box and adapted to be received between the locking member and the closure, secondlocking member carried by the box and rotatable about anaxis at right angles to that of the first-named locking member, said second locking member having a flange extending parallel to its axis of rotatiomand said plate having a finger adapted to be received-behind the flange, said fiangejand said first-named locking member each having slots through which the fingers may pass when the closure is closed oropened, and thumb pieces exterior of the box and closure by which the locking members may be turned.
