BOX-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,108, dated November 28, 1882.
Application filed May 25, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LANG, of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has reference to an improved fastening device for boxes of all kinds; and it consists of a hollow handle-casing that is pivoted to the lower face-plate of the box and acted upon by an interior spring, the pivot of the handle-cash] g being extended to the inside of the face-plate and provided with a fixed hook that passes through a slot of the flange of the lower face-plate and engages the slotted flange of the upper face-plate of the box.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box with an improved fastener. Fig. 2 is adetail rear eleration of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same. the handle-casing being shownin section; and Fig.4, a vertical traverse section on line 00 or, Fig. 2.

In the drawings, A represents the lower and B the upper face-plate of my improved fastener for jewelry and other boxes. Both face-plates are provided with inwardly-extending lips or flanges and are secured respectively to the body and cover of the box.
To the lower plate, A, is pivoted a hollow face-plate, O, which is acted upon by the outer end of an interior spring, a, that is secured at one end to lower face-plate.

To the inner end of the pivot-pin b of the casing G is applied a fixed hook, D, thatpasses.
slotted, so that the hook D can enter and lock the same. To open the fastening, the handlecasing G is swung sidewise, as indicated by arrows in Figs. 2 and 3, so that the hook D releases the upper plate, B, when the box may be opened. The handle-casing O is returned by its spring as soon as released from the pressure of the finger, and is thereby brought back, together-with the hook D, into its normal vertical position, the box being readily closed by pressing the lid down until the hook reengages the slotted lip of the upper face-plate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, in a box-fastener, of the lower face-plate, A, having a slotted lip or flange, a pivoted handle-casing, 0, having an interior spring, a, and a fixed hook, D, attached to the inner end of the handle-pivot, with an upper plate, B, having a slotted lip or flange for the entrance of the hook, all substantially as set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my namein presence of two subscribing witnesses.
