UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
CHARLES A. HCTCHKISS, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT lN CURRY-COMBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,745, dated October 11, 1875 application filed November 30, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES A. HOTGH- KIss, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Curry- Combs, of which the following is a specifica- 'tion:
This invention relates to curry-combs; and it consists in providing and attaching to the rear side or back of such combs a rigid metallic hoop or handle, and a ring or shoulder at the side thereof, that shall serve as a thumbrest, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is an end View, showing the comb provided with a handle and a thumb-rest. Fig.- 2 is a top view of the same, showing the use made of the handle and the thumb-rest.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the curry-comb,-which may be made of any appropriate style or shape. B is the handle of flat band or other shaped metal.
. It is constructed in the form of a semicircular bail or hoop, and is adapted for being clasped by the fingers, as represented. C is the thumb-rest. This thumb-rest may be a ring or circle, or it may be the section or half of a circle. It may be constructed with the handle and of the same bar of metal, as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be constructed of a separate bar and attached to the side of the comb. The thumb-rest is placed where the ordinary wooden handle is attached to the comb, and so that the thumb bears upward against it in using it on the horse. The common Wooden curry-comb handle is very apt to get loose in knocking the comb to expel the dust and dirt. D D are stubs rigidly attached to the back of the comb, which are knocked against the sides of the stable or any convenient fixture for expellingithe dirt.
This comb is adapted for reaching all parts of the horse, and is handled with much more ease than the ordinary curry-comb. It takes up but little room in packing for. transportation, and is easily and cheaply constructed.
I am aware that a bail or hoop on the back of a curry-comb to serve as a handle is not new. I do not, therefore, claim the same, broadly; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I The currycomb provided with a rigid metallic handle on its back, and a thumb-rest, substantially as specified.
