FILING CABINET FOR PEESCRIETIONS, ETC.

This invention relates to tiling cabinets tor presc 'iptioiis, records or other papers.

The object is to provide a simple, cheaply manufactured and strong and durable cabinet in the form of a box-like structure tor holding a plurality ot papers or records, preterably o'tuniiorm size, said cabinet being ada-ptcd to be used singly or alone or in connection with other similar cabinets to contain, each, a certain number ot such papers, say an alphabetical division or a numerical section, taken, as desired, from the consecutive numbers of prescriptions, the boxes being so constructed as to permit ot' stacking one upon the other and in rows, the locking and with drawing means being located at the front, as well as indicating means designating the contents.

Another object is to provide a cabinet in which, when the lid or cover is thrown back, the entire stach ot tiled prescriptions or papers is exposed on all sides and may be readily lifted or swung to one side to tacilitate the thorough inspection ot' any one ot said papers without removing the saine from the tiling means. v

A linal object is to pro-vide a cabinet in which the papers are all maintained in substantial alinement with each other and which maybe readily placed on or removed 'from the tiling means when desired, the. cabinet fully protecting said papers from lire, water or other damage.

A iull and complete understauidingl ot the invention may be obtained trom a consideraton ot the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing torming a part ot' this specilication, it bcingunderstood that while the drawing shows a practical i'orm oi the invention, the latter is not to be confined to strict conformity lleerring to the drawing and more particularly ligure 2 thereof, there is shown a tiling cab-inet constructed in accordance with the invention and comprising a flat, rectanguflar base member liorined ot suitable, thin metal, such as sheet iron, or the same may be i'ormcd ot ordinary commercial tin o'lf heavy grade. The base l is preferably oblong in shape and is provided along its two long sides` with upturned marginal flanges 2 formed by bending the metal upwardly, and along the front edge` with asiinilarly formed flange'-i, while the rear, Vnarrow edge isprovided with a plurality ot' integrally formed hinge eyes 4. rlhe trent marginal flange 3 isprovided with a centrally located, upstanding tongue 5 preferably formed by an integral extension thereof and provided adjacent to its upper end with an aperture 6, the terminal of the said tongue being` turned forwardly and downwardly to constitute a loop-shaped iinger-hold 7 for a purpose to be explained. y

Adjacent to the rear end of the base meinber and at the longitudinal center line therewith the showing thereoit, but may be changed or modified, so longl as such changes oi' modilications mark no material depart-ure from the salient 'features ot the invention, as specilich a , proved cabinet in closed position.

rl`he filing post .is thus rigidly mounted on the base, and said post is threaded at its upper extremity 'tor the reception ot a suitable thumb nut 13 which may be easily and quickly removed for the purpose oli' applying or removing prescription blanks, cards or other records lll, which are preferably ot a uniform, rectangular form somewhat smaller than the dimensions oi the base, and which are-preferably provided withapertures or punch holes l5 adjacent to one end and at the-longitudinal center lines of` said blanks. Thus when a stack of such records are tiled upon the post, y the same may be easily placed in alinement withveach other .and in spaced relation to the sides and ends ot the base mC-imber.'` The nut 13 may, it desired, be dispensed with and the filing post11 provided with apointed upper end tor puiieturing ordinary blanks or papers, as will be readily understood.

A hinged lid or cover of box-like formation is adapted to be used in connection with the base, and said cover is likewise formed of' the same kind of sheet metal as the base. Thecover comprises a top 16 having longitudinal side walls 17 formed integrally.therewith and adapted to fit down within the aforesaid side fianges 2 of the base member when'tlie cover is in closed position,as shown in Fi gure 1 of the drawing.

The top'wall 16 and side walls 17 are provided at their frontfand rear ends with continiious,abuttingflanges 18 turned inwardly and `adapted to receive within the same a front wall 19 anda back wall 20 respectively, the lower edges ot' which are flush `with the lower edgesot the side walls, and the niar- `gins of which may be secured within said flanges `by soldering, welding, riveting, as desired.

The rear wall 20,` at the free lower edge thereof, is provided with coinpleifnentary crimping or hinge eyes 21 adaptedto fit between It-he atoresaid eyes 4 ofthe base member and to be pivoted thereto by a suitable hinge pin 22, which permits the cover to be swung forwardly and downwardly to rest directly upon the upper face of the base member, with the front and sides located within their respective flanges 2 and 3. 7hen the cover is thus closed the aperture 6 in the aforesaid tongue is adapted to receive a projection 23 formed on the front face ot the front wall 19, such project-ion causing Vthe tongue, which sufficientlv resilient, to spring forward slightly to allowsuch automatic locking engagement.

The front wall 19 is also provided with a suitable holding means 24 for receiving and holding an index card 25 having suitable intion,fthe cover of which may be quicldy and' easily thrown back,.uncovering the entire stack of' papers so that the same may be readily turned to one side oi' the other, or elevated on the filing post, in a manner to expose any desired paper without removing the same from said post, andthat, by merely removing the nut13, other prescriptions, etc., may be added from time to time. A filing cabinet comprising a sheet metal base provided along its front and sideedges with upstanding flanges, VVthe front flange having a springhook, the rear edge of the base being formed into` hinge f elements, a sheet-metal-cover box having a top wall substantially equall in area to the base, and depending front, rear and side walls joined thereto, the front and side walls being adapted to lit, along their free edges, within the flanges of the base, said rear wall having complementary hinge elements at its free edge for connection to the elements on the base, said front wall having a projection for eoaction with said spring hook and also having an index card holder, and means mounted ontlie base forholding and alinng prescriptions or the like.

VIn a filing cabinet; a fiat base' adapted to support a stack of blanks; low, upstandiiig flanges forniedon'tlie front'and side edges of the base and normally exposing said stack onlthe topand four sides'tliereot; a box-like cover adapted to fit on the margins of the base and completely cover the stack of blanks when closed, with the free edges of the front and side walls of the cover fitting within said flanges; coacting hinge elements (formed on the vfree edge of the rear wall andthe rear edge of the base; an upstanding tongue formed integrally with the front flange of the base having a normal tendency to spring inwardly and provided with a seat; a projection formed on the front of the cover to enter the seat when the cover is'closed; said baseliaving a central raised portion near the rear edge and provided with a central opening; a post having a reduced lower end seatedin the opening; a nut threaded on said lower end beneath the, raised portion to rigidly hold the post for .tiling the blanks and permitting same to be swung laterally; and a retaining nut threaded on the upper end of the post.
