MARSHAL K. BUTTERFIELD AND ALFRED D. HOLLIDAY, OF REDWOOD FALLS, MINNESOTA.

IMPROVEMENT IN SAMPLE-BOXES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,448, dated October 5, 1875; application filed August 16, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, MARSHAL K. BUTTER- FIELD and ALFRED D. HOLLIDAY, of Redwood Falls, in the county of Redwood and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sample- Boxes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The nature of our invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a box to be carried in the hand for exhibiting samples or carrying any small articles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of our invention.

A represents the base or lower part of our hand or sample box, in which are made two drawers, B B. These drawers extend from one side of the base to the opposite side, and are both drawn out on the same side, or one on each of two opposite sides of the base. On the othertwo sides of the base the bottom is extended, and a curved rim attached thereto and to the corners of the base, forming two side receptacles, O O.

From the center of the base A extends upward a vertical rod, 0., and a collar or plate, 11, is fastened on top of the base around said rod. On this plate or collar rests a circular plate or disk, D, having a framework, E, erected thereon in the shape of a cross, and in each arm of said frame-work is a drawer, G.

The corners formed by the four arms of the frame are provided with curved rims 11, forming four receptacles, H H. On top of the frame E are secured four circular boxes, I I, and over the center of the frame is a handle, J,as shown.

The vertical rod a passes through the center of the disk D and frame E, and a nut may be screwed on the upper end of the rod to hold the upper structure to the base, and allow the former to be rotated, if desired.

This handbox, thus constructed, may be used for exhibiting samples or for carrying about any small articles for sale; or it may be used for any purpose for which it may he found applicable.

Having thus fully described our invention,

what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The within-described hand-box, consisting of the base A, with drawers B and side receptacles O, and the rotating top D E, with drawers G, corner receptacles H, and top boxes I, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
