Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIOFa y JOSEPH 1:3.V HARLOW, OF PORTLAND, MAINE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TOWILLIAM A. JAGKMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SOFA-BEDS.
I Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,1 55, dated September 28,1875; application Jled March 3, 1875.
I new and useful Improvements in Sofa-Beds;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
which will enable Others skilled in the art to which it pertains t0 make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
Figure l isa side elevation of my invention when closed to form a sofa or lounge 5' Fig. 2'is a top-plan view of my invention with the parts opened ont to form a bed. Fig. 3 is a side view of my invention when the same is in the position shown in Fig. 2. Same letters show like parts.
The Object of my invention is to produce a convenient article of furniture Which may be used as a sofa or lounge, and by a change in the relative position of its parts may be used as a bed. A
My invention may be thus described: a shows the fixed or rigid part of the lounge. b shows the hinged part, which,when the de- .vice is to be used as a sofa, is turned over upon the part a. on the hinges c, as shown in Fig. l. The arm-rest. d', unlike those shown in most of the sofa-beds in use,`is rigidly connected to, and forms a part of. the hin ged part b. e'shows two, arms hinged tothe heads of the parts at and b, as shown by the dott-ed lines in Fig. 2, and clearly shown in Fig. 3. Attached'to the foot of the lounge, and extending up to the ends of the arms e, is the canvas or sack f. The upper end of the canvas is attachedto a bar in any convenient manner (hooks and eyes being deemed preferable,however) to a bar, g, which fits over the ends of the arms e, or it may, if desired, be provided with sockets into which the ends of the' arms will fit. The clothing is then laid upon this canvas or sack f, and the article is ready for use as a bed. When desired to form a lounge the bar gis removed and placed upon the part a, the arms e turned over upon the part-s a b of the device, and the part b turned up over and upon a, which operation leaves the different parts in the position shown in Fig. l-that is to say, ready for use as a lounge.
A sofa-bed constructed as just described is cheap, durable, and convenient.
I do not claim the head-rest shown in patent to H. S. Garter, No. 156,131, March 5, 1874, which is-detachable at one end from the bed, and is capable of being turned on a pivot, so as to lie flat on` immovable part of the body of the bed. The head-rest in my invention,
rigid arm-rest d, arms e, canvas f, and bar g,
as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim `the foregoing as my oWn-I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH B. HARLOW.
Witnesses:
FRANK H. JORDAN, GHARLEs E. CLIFFORD.
