Description

R. VON FRQMMER SAFETY MECHANISM FOR FIREARMS Aug. 21, 1923.
Filed Aug. 10, 1926 Patented Aug. 21, 1928.
" qnunotr VQN 'FROMMER, or. 'iu'nAznsr, nuiveanyg 7 SAFETY MECHANISM FOR FIREARMS."
', J Application filed August 10, 1926, Serial No. 128,496, and in Hungary August 14, 1925.
According to the present invention the firing pin or some part of the gun connected therewith, for example the firing pin nut, is provided with a projection and the breech f casing with a groove, or the breech casing is provided with a projection and the other part of the gun with a groove, so that in the rear position of the firing pin the projection may be turned into the groove, the firing pin being thereby secured in its rearposition.
In the accompanying drawing one form of the mechanism according to the invention is v diagrammatically shown by way of example.
Fig. 1 is a horizontal, longitudinal sectional-view of the breech bolt, the breech casing and part of the barrel, the breech bolt being fully closed.
Fig. 2 shows the tooth of the breech bolt and the notch of the firing-pin-nut in en- ,gagement.
Fig. 3 is the same View as Fig. 1 the 'handle, however, being turned with 90.
Fig. 4 is a vertical, longitudinal sectional view of the mechanism the firing pin being cocked, while Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken on lines VV of Fig. 1 the firing pin being secured.
In the breech casing 2 which is connected to the barrel 1 the breech bolt 3 is arranged in a well known manner. The handle 4 of the breech bolt in its closed or turned down position bears with its root-portion 5 against the surface 6 of the breech casing 2 thereby effecting the locking of the breech bolt. The firing pin 7, arranged in the breech bolt is subject to the action of a spring 8 and is screwed together with the firing-pin-nut 9.
According now to the invention there is arranged on the breech bolt 3 a tooth 10 which registers in the closed position of the breech, as in Fig. 1,with the notch 11 provided in the firing-pin-nut, this enabling the firing-pin to discharge the cartridge pushed in the barrel. In every other position of the breech bolt, that is if the handle 4 is not fully turned down this is impossibility because the tooth 10 prevent-sthe'.firing-pinnut and thereby the' firing pin from completing their forward movement (Fig. 3).
For the purposeof preventing an unintentional shooting forward of the firing pin 7 or the firing-pin-nut 9 there 'is arranged on the latter a projection 12 which may be turned into a groove 13 provided in the breech casing 2 by pulling backwards and rotating the firing pin by means of the knob 15, whereby the firing .of the gun is made impossible because the groove 13 retains the firing pin by means of the pro jection12. If it is desired to terminate thelocking of the firing pin the projection 12 V is turned out from the groove 13 and is let gently forward.
In order to prevent the projection 12 from accidentally turning out from the groove 13 the latter is provided with a notch 14 (Fig. 4) which is formed onthe front side of the groove, and joins at its top side, at 17 the bore of the breech casing (Fig. 5). In other words the notch 14 is not open while the groove 13 is open for permitting of the projection 12 to be; turned into the groove. By pulling now the firing pin backwards and releasing it after turning,
into the groove 13 the firing spring 8 will press the projection 12 of the firing pin in the notch 14 which as it is not open will not allow the projection to turn out. For releasing the projection 12,that is to say the firing pin, the same is first to be slightly drawn backwards so that the projection 12 may again enter the groove 13 wherefrom it may be turned out. The projection 12 beside that above mentioned, has another function that of guiding the firing-pin-nut which function is performed by its being guided in the slot 16 in which the root-portion 5 of the handle 4 is guided in a well known manner.
Obviously, the, tooth 10 and its corresponding notch 11 might be reversedly arranged, that is to say the tooth may be pro vided on the firing-pin-nut and the notch on the breech bolt. In the same manner the projection 12 and the groove 13 may also be reversedly arranged, that is to say the groove on the firing-pin-nut and the projection on the breech casing. One of the two engagement elements may be arranged instead of on the firing-pin-nut on the firingthe firing pin.,
