My invention relates to improvements in stool structures and the object of the invention is to construct a stool inwhich a footrest is provided, and a further object ofthe invention is to so attach the footrest to the stool that it can be swung upwardly towards the center seat supporting spindle in order to reduce the space taken up upon the floor and to enable the stool to be readily moved from one spot to another.

A further object of the invention is to ina receptacle within the footrest portion of my stool which can be used for containing shoe polishing implements, and, a further object of my invention is to make the stool adjustable in 'height so that it can be either' used as ahigh stool or lowered so r hin ged thereto' that the seat constitutes a step for enabling the user to reach the high shelves etc.

My invention consists of a stool construct ed and arranged all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my stool showing the footrest in the downward functioning position.

The base portion of my stool consists of a substantially triangular frame 1 having three legs2 each extendingoutwardly from one of its apexes, the lower ends or feet 3 of the legs being each furnished with a semi-spherical non-slipping foot member 4: formed of rubber or some like material. The frame 1 is preferably constructed of L shaped cross section to give lightness with strength and the upper face thereof is suitably recessed around the center orifice 5 to receive the outwardly extending horizontal fianges 6 of a receptacle 7 which depends .from the frame, the flanges 6 being positioned fiush with the upper face of the frame and suitably secured thereto by means of spot Welding or in any other-similar manner. 8 is a lid provided for the recess 7 being along its inner edge 9 and 1927, Serial No. 201,769.

furnished with a finger orifice 10 by means of which the lid can be swung upwardly into the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. r The rear apex 11 of the member 1 supports the lowerend of an upwardly extendng sleeve 12 in Which a spindle 13 is slidably mounted, and 14: is a seat secured upon the upper end of the spindle. 15 is a spring catch furnished at a suit-able height upon the side of the sleeve 12 for holding the lid 10 of the receptacle 7 in its open position.

16 is 'a Vertical slot in the sleeve 12 exi tending from the vicinityof the upper end thereof to a point intermediately ofits height, and 17 are a plurality of spaced apart bayonet catch slots which open into the slot 16 to receive a radially extending pin 18 upon the spindle 13 ,so that the spindle can be adjusted in height in respect to the sleeve 12. The upper ends 19 of each of thebayonet catch slots 17 are above the entrances 20 from the bayonet catch slots into the slot 16 so that the entrances 20 diverge into the bayonet catch slots. The object of this construction is to enable the stool to be lifted from one spot to another by lifting the seat 14 without having the pin 18 slide from its slot into the slot 16 and allowing the seat and the spindle 13 to be jerked upwardly. lVhen the stool has been lifted by the seat it will be seen that the pin 18 will merely move to the upper end 19 of the baynnet catch slot in which it is contained and will not move into the slot 16 unless the seat and spindle 13 are partially rotated 21 is the swingable portion of the footrest being substantially semi-Circular in form and secured along its straight side 22 to-the straight edge of the frame 1 by means of a suitable hinge 23, and 2 1 is a single leg depending from the vicinity of the outer end of the member 21 to constitute asupport therefor when the footrest member is in the functioning position as illustrated in Figure 1. When the stool is in use the swingable footrest member 21 may be swung upwardly into the position as illustrated in Figure 4 wherein the'leg 24 extends upwardly adja-` cent to the sleeve 12.

My stool is primarily designed for domestic purposes, particularly for kitchen use wherein the housewife very often requires a seat higher than a 'kitchen chair, and provided with some kind of a footrest to enable her to hold mixing bowls or other similar kitchen utensils upon her knee. My stool also performs an in'portant function as a stopping means, as the seat H can be lowered to enable the user to step from the footrest 21 therein, to reach the high shelves etc. When the stool is not in use such footrest portion 21 can be swung into position as illustrated in Figure at wherein mystool will net take up Very much more space than the ordinary stool of tl'uree leg type, and also by providing the rccoptacle 7 in the frame for containing shoe brushes etc. my stool finds a ready use as a shoe cleaning stand.

From the foregoing description it Will be apparent that I have devised a footrest stool of a Very simple construction Which Will fulfill a variety of uses Within the home and very materially add to the comfort and convenience of the housewife.

lVhat I chiim as my invention is:

1. ln a device of the character described, the conbination of a foot rest stool and a shoe cleaning stand, a frame, a plurality of legs extending downwardly therefron, seat supporting means extending upwardly from one side of the frame, a shoe cleaning implement containing box positioned interiorly of the frame, the lid of the box forming in conjunction With the frame partofthe foot rest of the stool, and a shoe cleaning stand foot rest portion pivotally mounted upon the frame and adapted to normally lie in the same plane as the frame and box lid foot rest portion to constitute in eombination therewith an extended foot rest for the stool and a shoe cleanin stand. V

2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a stool and a shoe cleaning stand, a substantially triangular frame, a plurality of legs each extending down- Wardly from one of the apexes of the frame, seat supporting means extending upwardly from one of the apexes of the frame,a"shoe cleaning implement containing box positioned interiorly of the frame, the lid of the box forming in combination With the frame part of the foot rest of the stool, and a shoe cleaning .stand foot rest portion pivotally mounted upon the side of the frame opposite the apex from Which the said supporting means extends, and adapted to normally lie in the same plane as theframe and box lid foot rest portion to constitute in comhination therewith an extended foot restfor the stool and a shoe cleaning stand. r
