G. N. MASON DO'OR LQCK Filed May l2, 1927 wir* Patented July 31, 1928.
GEORGE N. MASON, OF READING UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CORPORATION, VAN IA.
PENNSYLVANIA, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA, A. CORPORATION OF PENN SYL- ASSIGNOR TO READING HARDWARE DOOR LOCK.
Application led May 12,
utilized, and in which both of said bolts are capable of actuation by a key operated cam.
The invention is intended primarily to provide means for actuating the bolts irrespective of the position of the dead bolt when the key is applied to the cani cylinder, as for instance when the dead bolt, for any reason, has been only partially thrown.
The invention contemplates a latch bolt operating lever slidable with the lock or dead bolt.
pivotally mounted upon and The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which i Figure l is a back view of a portion of the lock casing, with the back plate removed and showing shot both dead bolt and latch bolt in the or locked position.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through 2-2 Fig. l.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure l, but with the dead bolt partially shoti' The numeral l designates the casing, 2 the dead bolt and 3 the latch bolt, which latter is backed by a spring 4 to keep it normally sliot.
5 designates the key cylinder and 6 the bolt actuating cam.
The dead bolt is lever 7, such as is provided with a pivoted disclosed and claimed in Letters Patent No. 892,347, which patent made provision for engagement of the dead bolt by the cam, irrespective of the position of the dead bolt.
In the present instance I apply this structure to a. lock in which both the dead bolt and the latch bolt are actuated by the cam action, and to do this I provide a two part latch bolt lever 89, both of which are pivotally mounted d bolt.
dea
on and slidable with the The member 8 is formed with a curved,
depending portion l0 in engagement with pat the h of, and contacting with the one end of member 9, whose other end lies within 1927. Serial No. 190,698.
the path of and is capable of being depressed by the cylinder cam. y The numeral 20 designates the tumbler carried by the dead bolt, and 2l is a spring backed lever, pivotally mounted on and carried by the dead bolt, and this lever is formed with a heel 23 at its free end, which heel forms the forward or outer wall of the cam engaging throat. The spring 22 keeps the heel end of the lever normally in raised position, as shown.
Assuming the parts ure 3, that is, with the dead bolt partially thrown or shot, With the parts in this position, and with the lever members 8 and 9 mounted on studs on the casing, instead 0f on studs on the lock bolt itself, it would be impossible to actuate the lock, because the cani would, when it contacted with the member 9, stop in its rotary movement and could not engage and depress the end 23 of the lever 21. In the presentinstance however, the cani contacts with the member 9, and the continued movement of the cam will force the dead bolt out until the cam passes it,
when it will be free to engage the free endof the lever 2l, depress it, and allow the cam to enter the throat of the dead bolt and draw it into its inner or un-locked position, and
another revolution of the cam will i actuate h levers 8 and 9 and withdraw the latch It is seen therefore, that no mattcrwliere the dead bolt may be, the cam will in its ordinary travel, bring the parts into proper position for actuation by first placing the dead bolt into proper -operable position, and then actuating both the dead bolt and the latch bolt.
This object, as stated, is accomplished by mounting the pivoted levers 8 and 9 upon studs on the dead bolt, instead of on the casing, in which latter case thel cam action would be blocked when the dead bolt was accidently thrown only a part of it-s normal distance, while iny the present instance the spring-backed movable lever 2l permits the cam' to enter the throat of the dead bolt and then actuate the bolt in the usual manner.
What I claim is to be as shown in Fig- In a door lock having a dead bolt, a
spring-backed latch bolt, and levers carried ing tln'oat ot thc dead bolt and Whch hccl bythe dead bolt through which the latch is capable of being depressed whercby the bolt may be actuated; a spring backed level', cam may enter Said throatat all points o't l0 ivotecl on and carried by the dead bolt, a projection of said bolt. 5 olt actuating cam, said spring backed lever In testimony whereof l atllx my Signature.
having a hcc/l on its nncr o1l troc end which 1 heel forms one of the Walls of tho cam engag- GEGRGE N. MASON.
