LATCH FOR VEHICLE'DooRs.
Application led November 29, 1920.
fo all whom lit may concern.'
Be it known that I, RICHARD B. KAIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Latches for Vchicle Doors; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full. clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application. and represent, in-
Fig. 1 an inside face view of a latch for vehicle doors constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 an insideface view of same, partly in sections and showing the locking mechanism in its operating position.
Fig. 3 a similar view showing the locking mechanism in its released position.

This invention relates to an improvement in latches for vehicle doors and particularly to latches which are operated from the inside by lever handlesand from the outside by rota-r spindles.
The og'ect of this invention is to provide means for positively lockingthe door, which means may be placed in locking position from the inside, so that when the door is closed it can only be opened by one having the proper key to manipulate the lock mechanism and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my inventionI employ a latch of common construction including a case plate 10 formed with a front flange 11 through which the usual latch bolt 12 extends. Thislatch bolt is normally projected by a Vspring 13 and. is operated by a lever handle 14 bearing against an 'upward projection 15 from the latch vbolt and moved against a spring lmounted. on a guide pin 17. The latch also includes the usual cam 18, adapted to be operated from the outside Serial No. 427,122.
for the cam. This dog is provided with anoperating handle 23 the vertical movement of which will move the dog into or out of' its locking position. This dog is connected by a vertlcally movable slide 24 located in a groove 25 formed in the case plate and extends below the latch bolt, where it is provided with a stud 26, adapted to be engaged by a roll back 27 operated by a cylinder-lock mechanism 28 of usual construction. Preferably a friction ball latch 29 will be mounted in a fixed block 30, the ball extending into a notch 3l formediforit in the tail of the locking dog. If it is desired to lock the door, when leaving a car, the handle 23 will be depressed. so as to move the dog 20' downward into the path of movement of and against the cam 18. This does not prevent the movement of the latch by the lever handle so 'that the door may be opened in to lift the. slide 24 and force the dog 20 up ward out of the path of movement of cam 18 so that the latch may be'retired by movement of the knob spindle turning the hub 9. I thus provide, in a verysimple manner, a positive lock for a vehicle door latch which permits locking'the door Without the use of a key but which requires the use of a key to open rthe door from the outside. l
I claim: v
A latch comprising a case plate, a spring actuated latch bolt mounted thereon, a cam adapted to beturned to move said latch.
bolt. a dog pivotlly connected to the ease In testimony whereof. I have signed this plate in line with said cam, a handle pvotspecification in the presence of two sub- 1,0 ally connected with sa'id dog: and extending seribing witnesses.
upwardly therefrom a slide pvotally eon- L r p neeted with said doggnd a lock mechanism RICHARD B' RAINER in position to lift said slide and move said Yitnessesz (log out of the path of movement of thesaid FRANCIS I. MARTIN, ram. if RUTH E. BRADLEY.
