A. M. DUBURN.
. Lanterns.
N 1 67 65]" I Patented Sept.14,,1875.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONY M. DUBURN, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [67,651, dated September 14, 1875; application filed September 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTHONY M. DUBURN, of Adrian, county of L'enawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of the guard or connecting-wire as a spring to allow the-displacement of the top cap or dome and the subsequent removal of the globe for cleaning or repairs without the use of any other catches, hinges, or springs,
' thus materially lessening the cost of the manufacture of the lantern.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operatioinreferring to the annexed drawing, which forms a partof this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lantern embodying my invention and showing the top in place. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the top taken off.
A represents the base of the lantern with oil-pot B. G is the bottom hoopor body. D is-the globe; E, the dome or top, and G the connecting-Wire or guard. The guard-wire is pivoted at both ends to the body 0 at a, and passes through the dome or top E at a point where it will not touch the globe D. This guard-wire is curved in its passage from the body 0 to the dome E sufficient to give it the then be removed from the body 0. The same I result may be accomplished by using two guards or connecting wires or strips, pivoted at top and bottom to the dome and body, instead of the continuous wire pivoted to the body and passing through the dome, as above described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
One or more elastic .or spring guard-wires, having pivotal connection to the body and dome'of a lantern, and in combination therewith, arranged and operating to admit of the ready removal of the globe by compression of the guard-wires and movement of. the dome, substantially as shown and described. v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereunto affix my signature this 3d day of September, 1874.
ANTHONYIM. DUBURN.
