UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

LANTERN-FRAME.
No. sqness.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 9,1906. Serial No. 310,651.
Patented July 30, 1907.
My invention relates especially to the construction of the frames of hand lanterns, particularly such as are known as closed-bottom, and has for its object the provision of simple and effective means for connecting the lower ends of the upright guard wires to a bodyhoop, or the equivalent.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists essentially in the combination with a body-hoop provided with openings therethrough, of upright guard wires having curved portions near their lower extremities extending through the openings in the body-hoop, a holding wire or band crossing the openings and passing through the bends in the guard wires, the lower extremities of the guard wires engaging the body hoop; all of which will be hereinafter first fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lantern frame embodying my invention. Fig 2 is a vertical, sectional view at line (1-0. of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a like view of a modification of the construction shown and illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
Similar numerals of reference, wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. 1 are upright guard wires, provided near their lower extremities with bent or curved portions 2.
3, 4 and 5 are horizontal guard wires.
6 is a body-hoop having openings 7 therethrough in which the bent or curved portions 2 of the upright guard wires 1 are seated.
8 is a holding wire or band crossing the openings 7, and passing through the bonds 2. The lower extremity of each upright wire 1 is bent or flattened down against the exterior of the body-hoop, as at 9, or may be provided with a notch, such as 10, Fig. 3, adapted to engage the body-hoop. 11 is'the base of the lantern.
When constructed and arranged in accordance with the foregoing description, my improved lantern frame will be found very rigid, the means employed for connecting the upright guard wires to the body-hoop being simple, yet effective, as, after assembling the parts, as shown, the frame is tinned in the usual man- 4 ner, insuring against any displacement.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In .a lantern frame, the combination with a body-hoop, provided with openings therethrough, of upright guard wires having bent portions near their lower extremities extending through the openings in the body-hoop, a holding wire or band crossing the openings and passing through the bends in the guard wires, the lower extremi ties of the guard wires extending through the openings and over-lapping the exterior of the body-hoop, and terminating at the body-hoop, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereto aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
