Description

FRANK CHAPMAN, or AURORAVILLE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR or ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO NELSON R. BOLLES, or SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN THlLL-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,431 dated September 7, 1875; application filed To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK CHAPMAN, of
- Auroraville, VVanshara county, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain Improvements in WagonOlips, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to provide for an improved wagon-clip, which is self-locking and selt adjustable, and also prevents the bolt of the same from detaching itself accidentally. It is also easily locked and unlocked.
My invention consists in the construction of the self locking and adjustable bolt of the wagon-clip. This bolt is made of suflicient length to take in both collars of the clip, and to allow for a washer, which is to be placed between the bolt-head and the collar of the clip, next to the same. A spiral spring is then placed between the washer and the head of the bolt. The other end of the bolt is slotted in the center, and into this slot is placed a button, which is piyoted to the sides of the same in such a manner that the said button can be placed either parallel or horizontal to the bolt, when required. When the bolt is placed in the clip-collars, and the head of the same is pressed against the spring and washer, the button, which was at this time in a parallel position, will be placed in a horizontal position, in which position the bolt, by aid of the spiral spring, is held firmly and securely in its place.
In order to describe my invention more fully, I refer to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, which represents a plan view of a wagon-clip embodying my invention.
A is the wagon-clip, with collars b b and holes 0 0 through the same. D is a bolt passing through the holes 0 c, and provided with head 0. F is the washer or loose collar, having flange f. G is the spiral spring. H is the button, placed in the slot 'i, and is pivoted to the sides of the same by the rivets j.
Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim- In combination with a wagon-clip, the bolt D, having the head 6 and pivoted button H, and the loose collar F, having the inwardlyprojecting flange f, and provided with the yielding spring G, operating substantially as and for-the purpose set forth.
FRANK CHAPMAN.
