This invention relates lto improvements in hair dressing combs and vmore particularly to a comb assemblage which may be employed selectively with either gas or electricity as the source of heat without any change in the construction of the comb and merely by the substitution ofa heatingunit of one type for a heating unit of the other t' r e.
yllnother object of the invention is to provide a Vhaii' dressing comb 'which will be extremely simple in construction and in which the interchange of heating units may be edected without the employment of tools and in a few moments time.

Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sec-` tional view through the comb embodying the invention, the View illustrating the electric heating unit connected with the comb proper.
Figure 2 is a similar View illustrating the gas heating unit connected with the comb proper.
Figure 3is a perspective view of a tip member which forms a part of the comb.
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line of Figure 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
The comb proper is indicated in general by the numeral 1 and the same comprises a back 2 which may have any desired eX- terior contour such for example as that shown in Figure 4 of the drawings, and the back of the comb is formed with a longitudinal bore 3 which is of uniform diameter from end to end and, at the rear end of the back, is interiorly threaded as indicated by the numeral 4, for the purpose to be presently explained. The back of the comb is provided with the usual teeth 5 which may be curved in the direction of their extremities, as shown in Figure 4 of the drawings, or may be straight.
In Figure 1, the numeral 6 indicates 'in general an electric heating unit, and in Figure 2, the numeral 7 indicates in general a gas heating unit, and the invention contemn plates so constructing the device that these units may be substituted one for the other.
The electric heating unit 6 comprises a handle 8 in which is fitted a tube 9 extending longitudinally thereof. The said tube 9 is provided at its forward end with an in- 'tegral ferrule 10 which lits a reduced portion 11 of the said handle atthe forward end thereof, and the ferrule is provided with a reduced exteriorly threaded forward end 1'2 reinovablyfi'tted into the threaded endr4 Of the bore 33 ofthe back y2 of thel comb.
A tube 13 is secured at one endin the forward end of the fel-rule 10and the numeral 14 indicates an electric resistance Lun-it which is housed within the tube and which is yfinedf ly mounted atone end in the forward end of the tube 9. The numeral 15 indicates conductor wires which lead to the resista-nce unit 14 through the tube 9 in the handle 8 and these wires are adapted to be connected with a source of current supply by the usual plug 16, a. switch 17 being preferably interposed in the wires. At this point it will be evident that the heating unit 6 may be bodily removed from the back of the comb by merely unthi'eading thev ferrule from the said back and withdrawing the tube 13 and resistance unit 14. l
The gas heating unit 7 comprises a. handle 18 corresponding to the handle 8 and having a gas conducting tube 19 extending axiall therethrough and corresponding to the tube 9 of the unit 6. A ferrule 2O is preferably integrally formed with the forward end of the tube 19 and fits the reduced end 21 of the handle 18 and this ferrule has a jet opening 22 communicating with the forward end of the tube so that gas flowing through the tube from a source of supply will issue through the jet and be discharged into the bore `3 of the back of the comb, the ferrule having a reduced threaded end 23 removably fitted into the threaded end 4 of the said bore of the back. Air vent openings 24 are formed in the ferrule in advance of the jet opening 22 so that a volume of air may enter the ferrule to mix with the gas and thus support the combustion of the gas. At its rear end, the tube-19 has applied to it a fitting 25 constituting a party of the casing of a cut-od valve 26 similar to those employed in connection with gas jets, and the nipple 27 of an ordinary flexible gas tube 28 is fitted toanother branch 29 of the casing of the valve 26 and connects in the usual manner to a source of gas supply.
The diameter of the reduced threaded end of each of the ferrules 10 and 2O is precisely the same and the ferrules are correspondingly threaded so that in order to substitute one heating unit for another it is only necessary to unthread the unit which is to be replaced and then thread the other unit into lace.
p A tip 30 is arranged at the forward end of the back of the comb and the said tip comprises a reduced neck 31 which is frictionally fitted into the outer end of the bore 3, the tip being provided with a circumferential shoulder 32 to abut against the forward end of the back of the comb so as to limit the insertive movement of the said tip into the bore of the back.
From the foregoing description of the invention it will be evident that the interchangeabilit)Y of the heating units is a matter of great convenience, as for example to the dealers in such combs. inasmuch as they may carry in stock an assortment of the combs proper having different sizes of teeth, and
supply the desired comb proper with the de sired heating unit.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
A hair Ydressing:r device comprising:r a comb including a back having an open ended bore formed therein, a handle having a tube fitted longitudinally therein, the forward end of the tube havinga ferrule carried thereby, said handle having a reduced portion titled in the rear end of the ferrule. the forward end of the fer-rule havingT a reduced portion threaded in the rear end of the bore, a tip fitted in the outer end of said bore` a cylindrical heating unit engaged in the bore and having its respective ends fitted in the Ierrule and tip, and means passingjr through the tube for heating the unit.
