CROCHET HOOK Filed July 23, 1946 EDNA A. DOE RR INVENTOR.
4 TTOHNE Y8- Patented Mar. 29, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to crochet hooks, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved crochet hook in which the handle part functions as a magazine or container for a number of crochet hooks of different sizes, which are in the form of detachable tips on the handle, and which can be quickly and easily substituted or alternated at will, so that different types of crochetting can be performed to the best advantage, so that the crocheter is not under the necessity of the expense and inconvenience of providing and maintaining a similar number of ordinary crochet hooks.
Another important object of this invention is to provide an improved crochet hook of the character indicated above which, while providing the above mentioned and other advantageous features, eschews unusual or cumbersome form, and retains overall the conventional form of a crochet hook, so that no new or unusual skills are required for its manipulation and maintenance, and it can be immediately used in the manner of an ordinary crochet hook.
Other important objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description and the drawings appended thereto, wherein merely for purposes of illustration, a specific but non-limiting embodiment of this invention is set forth in detail.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a general side elevation, broken away to show internal construction, and,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation, taken at right angles to Figure 1, of the lower or forward part of the crochet hook.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 3 generally designates the crochet hook, chosen to illustrate this invention herein, comprising a substantially uniform diameter tubular handle parts 4, open at its outer end and internally threaded as indicated at 5 to receive a closure plug 6 in the form of an ordinary crochet hook terminal.
The opposite end of the tubular handle part 4 terminates in a solid, generally cylindrical part I which tapers forwardly to a squared end 8 which is formed with an axial threaded socket 9. Two opposite sides of the solid part 1 intermediate its ends are formed with longitudinal oval or elliptical concavities or indentations l0 and ll,
as in an ordinary crochet hook. One of these concavities, the concavity Ill, for instance, has marked thereon in longitudinal relation, as indicated at I2, the sizes of the additional crochet hook tips which are available in the interior of the tubular handle part 4, so that the user can, by always putting the tips in the hande in this order when not in use, know instanty without examining these tips, the exact size thereof by their relative positions in the handle part. The
' other concavity l i may be left plain or be provided with the users initial or the designation of the manufacturer, such as his trade mark.
. The interchangeable crochet hook tips 13 are generally cylindrical and tapered toward their conventional forward hook-equipped terminals I l, as is the case with equivalen portions of an ordinary crochet hook. The rear ends I5 are squared to conformably abut the squared ends 8 0f the solid part i, and are provided with axial threaded studs IE to thread into the socket 9 in the forward end of the solid part I.
The interior of the tubular handle part 4 defines a magazine ll whose diameter is such as to freely but not too loosely accept the interchangeable tips I?) whose larger ends l5 are all of the same size, the chief variation therein being in the shape and dimensions of the hook equipped terminals 14. The length of the magazine I1 is such as to accommodate the desired number of tips l3, in this case three, in tandem relation With respect to each other, with not too much clearance with the plug 6, so as to eliminate unwanted shifting or rattling of the tips, the tips being disposed in the magazine preferably with their hooked terminals l4 forward.
The above described crochet hook can be made of steel, bone, plastics, or any other suitable material, and the interchangeable tips can be made of different material from the remainder of the crochet hook if desired.
What is claimed is:
1. A crochet hook comprising a hollow handle open at one end and closed at its other end, a crochet hook tip threadedly carried by said closed end, and a plurality of crochet hook tips disposed within said handle, said hook tips being arranged in tandem relation with respect to each other, and a detachable closure plug for closing the open end of said handle.
2. A crochet hook comprising a hollow handle REFERENCES CITED open at one end and closed at its other end, said m open end being threaded interiorly adjacent its s iggg ggigg are of record m the outer end, a crochet hook tip threadedly carried by said closed end, a plurality of crochet hook 5 UNITED S ES PATENTS tips disposed within said handle, said hook tips Number Name Date being arranged in tandem relation with respect 215,979 ROSS May 27 1879 to each other, and a detachable threaded closure 1,208,958 Hawkins 19 1916 plug for closing the open end of said handle. 1,518,961 Bums 1924 10 EDNA A.
