PATENT OFFICE.
CORNELIUS G. MURPHY, 0] LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
MINER S HAND TOOL.
Application filed April 6, 1926. Serial No. 100,052.
My invention is a miners hand tool, being a combination tool in the form of pliers having various implements required by miners, incorporated therein.
A particular object and feature of the combination tool is the formation of a pair of pliers particularly adapted to manipulate the jet tip of a miner's acetylene gas lamp, having a special construction to allow ready inserting and withdrawing of the jet plug from the lamp structure.
Another feature of the invention isa receptacle in the handle for carrying a needle to clean the jet opening in the jet tip and a supply of matches, the hollow handle having a cutting edge with a closure cap to protect same and form a closure for the receptacle, the end of the hollow handle being adapted to cut washers or the like.
Another feature oi. my combination tool is the construction of the other handle in a gradual taper with a pointed end for making a hole in a dynamite cartridge or the like for the insertion of a fuse. The pliers are provided with special jaws for crimping the cap on the fuse.
My invention will be more readily under stood from the following description and drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my combination pliers;
Fig. 2 is an edge view taken in the direction of the arrow 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the application of my combination pliers to manipulating the nozzle tip of a miners acetylene gas lamp;
Fig. 4 is an end View of the pliers taken in the direction of the arrow 4 of Fig. 1;
and
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through the hollow handle, illustrating the receptacle for carrying the needle and matches.
My pliers comprise a pair of handles 1 and 2 pivotally connected together by any suitable type of pivot 3. The jaws are crossed so that the jaw 4 is attached to the handle 1 and the jaw 5 to the handle 2. The bearing sections 6 of the handles are flattened, giving an extended bearing-surface where the handles cross. Each of the jaws is provided with a semicircular groove 7 extending from side to side, forming when the jaws are closed a circular space 8 suitable for grabbing caps for crimping same in fuses of cartridges; The ends of the jaws are provided WithV-shaped notches 9, these notches extending axially of the pliers, providing aspace for gripping the nozzle get 10 of a miners acetylene gas lamp 11. These tips require to be frequently removed and cleaned or new tips reinserted. The notches are of such shape and the length of the gripping section 12 is suilicient to enable the operator to secure a sufiicient grip'on the tips, although these are relatively quite small.
The handle is shown as being hollow, having a receptacle 13 extending from the free end of the handle, this free end having a pointed 0r sharpened edge 14 suitable for cutting washers or the like and having screw-threads 15 on which a closure cap 16 may be threaded. The receptacle l3 ma be ntilized 'to accommodate a needle 17 w ich it isnecessary for miners to carry when using acetylene gas lamps, in order to clean the nozzle of the jet tip. These nozzles frequently become plugged and as the aperture is quitesmall it is necessary to use a sharp needle of hard metal to clean the jet opening. The receptacle may also be utilized for carrying a supply of matches. I
The other handle 2 has a gradually tapered section indicated by the numeral 18, ending .in a point 19. Such handle may be utilized to form a hole in dynamite cartridges for the insertion of fuses, the taper being sulficiently gradual to force a hole in the dynamite or similar cartridge without material danger to the operator.
From the above description it will be seen that although my phers containing a set of combination implements suitable for a miner, is of a simple character, nevertheless it provides a number of the essential tools which a miner should have constantly with him when working. Moreover, the pliers can be made quite small and therefore readily carried.
It is apparent also that the general construction and specific details may be considerably altered to adapt the combination tool for other purposes. However, such changes would be within the spirit of my invention as set forth inthe description, drawings, and 01mm.
