SMOKE AND GAS CONSUMING FIRE BOX FOR LOCOMOTIVES.

The present invention relates to an improved smoke and gas consuming fire box for locomotives, and has for its object to improve upon the structure disclosed in Letters Patent No. 1,577,175 issued to me on March 16th, 1926.
The improvements aim to provide more circulating space for greatly enhancing the eiiiciency of the structure and to afford a considerable saving in fuel.
"With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in cer tain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the boiler includes the usual casing 5 having disposed in the rear portion thereof, a crown sheet indicated generally by the letter A and including a crown top 6, as sides 7, rear plate 8, and the front plate 9 which forms a fine plate for receiving a plurality of fines 10. A grate supporting structure is indicated generally by the numeral 11, and includes grates 12 of ordinary construction which are disposed a slight distance to the side of the median longitudinal dimension of the grate supporting structure.
A pair of vertical partitions rise, one to each side of said median longitudinal dimension from the grate supporting structure and to the inner sides of the grates 12. The sheet 41, partitions 40, grates 12, grates B and front wall 42 form two fire boxes. Below the grate supporting structure, there is a suitable ash pit 13. The grate supporting structure 11 is horizontally disposed and mounted thereon adjacent the outer sides of the grates 12 are two vertically disposed water grates heretofore indicated by the letters B. said headers being connected by vertically disposed S-shaped tubes 17. The upper headers 15 communicate with a transverse header 44 at the front wall 42.
A pair of plugs 45 are 'provided in the sides of the casing in alinement with the transverse header 44, so that accessmay be had to the interior thereof, it being noted that the header 44 terminates in the space between the sides 7 of the crown sheet A and the sides of the wrapper 5. The space between the water grates and the crown sheet A forms the combustion chambers of the fire boxes.
A plurality of plugs 23 are provided in the upper headers 15 and lower headers 16 in order that access may be made to the interior of the tubes 17 for obvious reasons.
The lower headers 16 extend through the front sheet 9 and rear sheet 8 to communicate with front and back of the boiler. The water, therefore, will circulate downwardly in the boiler among the flue tubes 10, through I the lower headers 16, upwardly through the S-shaped tubes 17, through the upper headers 15 to back of boiler and to the header 44,
and into the space between the crown sheet and the wrapper.
The fire boxes have an upper passage 25 therein so that the fuel may be thrown into the fire boxes, and a door 26 is associated therewith. A passage 27 communicates with the bottom portions of the fire boxes and has a door 28 associated therewith. Peep passages 29 are provided for the combustion chambers and have doors 30 associated therewith. Access may be had to the combustion chamber through the doors 30. The bottom headers 16 extend through front sheet 9 and back sheet 8, giving circulation front and back. Plugs 32 are wash-out or repair plugs. Plugs 34 are provided in the front portions of the boiler in order that the lower headers may be cleaned. A plurality of draft openings 37 extend thru the partitions 40 and with openings 37 provide side drafts.
It will thus be seen that the gases and smoke cannot escape from above the fire on. the grates 12, but must pass through the fuel and through the water grates, that is, through the flame of the fire and be con-v sumed. Thus the smoke and gases are utilized as fuel.
From the above detailed description it will be seen by those particularly familiar with 1 description thereof.
Letters Patent 1,577,175, that I have improved the structure thereof by providing considerable more circulating space by the provision of twocombustion chambers as compared with the'single combustion chamber shown in the patent. These improvements greatly enhance the efficiency of my patented construction and provide a material saving in fuel. Otherwise my improved structure embraces all of the advantages of the-patented structure, and utilizes the simplicity, compactness and convenience found in said patented structure.
