Another object is to provide means operable between the aws of the Wrench, whereby the wrench is adapted for use with [differently sized pipes orrods, withoutthe usual necessity of adjusting the pivot ofthe 'piv oted jaw.

Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the shank of the wrench on one end of which is formed the enlarged portion 11, forming the fixed jaw. The upper face of this enlarged portion 11 is downwardly and longitudinally inclined, and formed with a plurality of transverse ratchet teeth 12. Theupper portion of the inclined face of the fixed jaw 11 is untoothed, as shown at 13. Straddling this POItlOIlll, and pivotally connected thereto, are the legs 14 of the pivoted jaw 15, said ]tlW. having the toothed face 16 for cooperation with the fixed jaw, and with an insert which will presently be explained.

and at a suitable distance from the fixed .jaw, there is secured the boss 17, and formed longitudinally through this boss is an open: 1ng18, which slidably receives the rod 19. On the forward end of the rod 19 there is fixed a block 20, the side faces of which are scored, as shown at 21, and the forward end of which is bifurcated, at 22,to receive the reduced and apertured rearward extension 23, of the insert block 24. .Vithin the bifurcated portion of the block 20, and hear. ing against the block and the said extension '23, is a coil spring 25. The side faces of the insert blockfl l are parallel, but the upper and lower faces 26 and 27 converge inthe direction of the outer or forward end of the block. Both of these faces 26 and 27 are formedwith transverse ratchet teeth 28. The upper face of the rod 19, rearwardly of the block 20, and for a certain distance from said block, is formed with teeth or scores 29, for engagement by the thumb of the hand which holds the shank of a the wrench, and by means of which the rod maybe slipped forwardly andrear Wardly, to place and withdraw the insert block 24. A stoppin 30is secured in the side of therod 19, rearwardly of the boss 17 for engagement with said boss to limit the forward sliding movement of the rod, whereby .to properly position the insert block 24 on the face of the fixed jaw. It will be noted that the blocks 20 and 2-1 slide on the upper edge face of the shank, between the legs of the pivoted jaw.
As 1 the rod 19 of the shank, with the result that when the insert block is disposed over the toothed face of the fixed-jaw, said insert will be forced downso that its lower toothed face engages with the toothed face of the fixed jaw. The pin 30 prevents any further forward move ment of the insert block, while the interlocking engagement of the teeth of the block, with the teeth of the fixed jaw, prevent any rearward movement of the insert block, the

Thus movement causes the block 20 to move inwardly, and the pivoted end of the insert bl'o'ckto be rocked on its rear end, as a fulcrum, which rear end rests on the untoothed portion of the fixed jaw. This disenga es the teeth of the insert block from the teet of the fixed, when the rod, and blocks, may be readily slipped rearwardly, thus removing the insert block from interference with the cooperative action of the fixed jaw and the pivoted jaw, for operation upon a piece of work of different diameter.
On one side face of the enlarged portion 11, of the shank, there is disposed an out wardly extending pin 31,. which is arranged to be engaged by a pin which projects from the lower edge face of the adjacent leg of the pivoted jaw, shown at 32, for limiting the forward swinging movement of the said jaw, and thereby ro erly position the jaw with relation to t e xed jaw.
What is claimed is:
1. A wrench including a fixed toothed jaw and a movable jaw, a toothed insert movable into and out of interlocking engagement with and position on the fixed jaw, a rod movably connected with the insert and slidably supported in position for moving the insert toward and away from: the fixed jaw, and means for urging the insert'into interlocking engagement with the fixed jaw.
2. A wrench including a fixed. toothed jaw and a movable jaw, a toothed insert movable into and out of interlocking engagement with the fixed: jaw, thefixed jaw having a shank, a block slidable on the shank and movably connected with the insert, a stem conuected withthe block slidably supported on thev shank and meansbetween the latter into interlocking engagement wit the fixed jaw.
3. A wrench including a shankhaving a fixed toothed jaw, a movable jaw mounted thereon, a toothed insert movable on the shank into and out of interlocking engagement with the fixed ja.w,ablock, slidable on theshank and pivotallyv connected with the insert for movement thereof, astemcarried by the block, guiding, means for the stem on the shank, and. resilient, means. between theblock and the insert for rocking the latinterl'ocking engagement with the fixed jaw.
4. A wrench including a shank having a fixedtoothed jaw, a mdt'able jaw mounted thereon, a tapered and toothed insert slidter into able on the shank into and out of interlockfixed jaw on one end and provided with teeth, a jaw pivotally sup rted on the fixed jaw and movable towar and awayther efrom, a guide onthe shank, a rod 'slidahl'e through the aide, a hloek on one end of the rod, a blogk movably connected with the first block and having teeth for interlocking engagementwith the teeth of the fixed jaw and teeth for cooperative working action with the pivoted jaw, and means for urging the second block into interlocking 'en gage nentwith the fixed jaw.
6. A wrench including a shankhaving, a fixed. toothed jaw, a jaw pivotally supported on the fixed jaw and moyable toward and away therefrom, a taperedinsert movable into and out of position on the fixed jaw and having teeth for interlocking engagement with the teeth of the fixed jaw and teeth for cooperative action with the teeth of the pivoted jaw, an operating rod ieldably connected with the insert and lsli ahly 'sup'por'ted on the shank, and means on the rod and cooperating with the said shank for limiting themovement of the rodi' I t 7. The combination with the shank and fixed toothed jaw of a wrench, the shank having a guide thereon, of. a. rod slidahle in the guide and having stop means for eiigaglement with the guide, a tapered member pivotally connected with one end of the rod,
