Application filed October 18, 1926. Serial 110.142,17?.
My invention relates to smoking pipes and its principal object resides in the provision of a smokingpipe wherein saliva is prevented from accumulating in the bowl and hence obviate the obnoxious objection of the saliva entering the smokers mouth.
A further object of the invention is to provide a smoking pipe of this character 'having a removable bowl or tobacco cartridge holder which can be readily removed for the purose of cleaning the saine.
With the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, constructions and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter speciically referred to, named and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a smoking pipe constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same; and,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view with the stem or mouth piece removed.
Referring to the invention in detail wherein the preferred form is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, a bowl fashioned from non-combustible material is designated at 5, the latter having its upper end provided with interior screw threads 6 for threaded engagement with exterior screw threads 7 on a tobacco cartridge holder 8. The sides and bottom of the cartridge holder 8 are spaced from the bowl to provide a smoke chamber 10 which has communication with the cartridge holder by way of outlet openings 9 in the bottom of the latter.
A lateral enlargement 11 is formed on one side of the bowl 5 and extends vertically of the same with its ends stopping short of the upper and lower edges of the bowl. An inverted L-shaped passageway or bore 12 is foimedfin the lateral enlargement and has one of its branches communicating with the smoke chamber 10 vand its other branch leading to the lower end of the enlargement. A threaded nipple 13 is cast with the enlargement 11 and communicates with the verticall branch of the opening 12. e
A mouth piece or stein 14 is threaded on the nipple 13. To prevent saliva passing from the smokers mouth and entering the bowl byway ofthe stem 14, I provide a valve mechanism in the passageway 12 to normally close the saine but which will be opened by suction or vacuum produced incident to the smoking of the pipe. The valve mechanism in this instance comprises a. ball 15 arranged at the point of communication of the two branches of the passageway 12 A and normally held againsta valve seat 16 aty the inner end of the vertical branch of this passageway. Aniexpansible coil spring 17 is positioned in ythe vertical branch of the passageway and has one end positioned against the ball valve and its other end engaged by an adjusting stem 18 threaded in the lower end'of this vertical branch. adjusting this stem 18 thevalve will always be held against its seat to normally sever communication between the bowll and the stem 14. lVhile the type of valve illustrated is a practical one it is obvious other types of valves may be employed and that the present invention contemplates tlie'use of such valves. l
From the disclosure it will be apparent that as the smoker draws or sucks upon the stem 14 the valve 15 will be drawn from its seat, permitting smoke to pass from the bowly and smoke chamber through the passageway and thence into the smokers mouth in the usualnianner. As` soon as the vacuum or 'suction is broken the valve is immediately seated, severing communication between the stem 14 and the bowl to prevent saliva from enteringthe latter.
While I have -illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of l variation and modification without departing from the spirit ofthe invention. I, therefore, do not wish'to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire'to avail myself of such variations and modications as comeiwithin the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention,fwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: y
1. In a smoking pipe, a bowl, a lateral enlargement formed on said bowl and provided with a` passageway f communicating with said bowl at a point near the top thereof, a mouth piece communicating with said passageway below the point of communication between said passageway and said bowl,
end of the vertical branch of the passageway, an expans'ble spring the vertical 10 pranchofeth passageway adgengagihg the stern and hall yalye, and a nouth plete com- I'niil'atlng Wlth the passageway.
o Intestmony whereof I have signed my I name to this specification.
' f THOMAS C. DE VORE.
