1 J. J. PAPSON SMOKER S PIPE Filed Sept. 23, 1927 INVENTOR E a-tented Set. 2, i928.
barren stares JOHN JOSEPH PAIL-SON, OF DICKSON CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
SMOKERS PIPE.
Application filed September 23, 1927. Serial No. 221,553.
This invention relates to improvements in tobacco pipes and has for an object the provision of a pipe of simple construction; which will insure a cool pure smoke that is free from the harmful effects of nicotine; will prevent the passage of saliva and tobacco juices into the mouth ofthe smoker and which may be readily taken apart and assembled for the purpose of cleaning.
With the above and other objects in view,
- the invention further in eludes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a pipe constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken through the stem of the pipe.
Figure t is a bottom plan view showing a fragmentary portion of the pipe stem with the chamber closure removed.
Figure 5 is a detail view of the chamber closure. v
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character indicates the bowl of the pipe from which extends a stem 11, while the mouth piece of the' the adjacent ends of which are reduced as shown. Shoulders 14C and 15 are thus provided upon the stem and mouth piece respectively against which the opposite ends of the sleeve abut. A chamber 16 is thus formed within the sleeve between the opposed ends of the stem and mouth piece.
The sleeve is provided in its bottom with an opening 17 which is shown as elongated and which is adapted to be closed by a plate or closure 18. This plate or closure is shaped to conform to the shape of the sleeve and has its opposite ends in sliding engagement with guide lugs 19 positioned upon opposite sides of the opening 17. A combined stop and holding lug 20 is located at one end of the sleeve, so that when the plate is positioned as shown inFigures 1 and 2 it will securely close the opening 17. The end of the plate remote from the stop 20 is. provided with a finger piece 21 by means of which it may be conveniently manipulated.
Extending longitudinally through the stem and mouth piece is a tube 22. 2 One end of-this tube is in communication with the bowl 10 and the opposite end in communication with the bore of the mouth piece 12, the tube extending through the chamber 16. The bottom portion of the tube within the chamber I 16 is provided with an opening 23 and located Within the chamber beneath this opening is an absorbent element 24. This element is preferably in the form of sterilized cotton.
When in use, smoke is drawn throughthe I smoke tube 22 and saliva, tobacco juices and the like will pass through the opening 23 onto the absorbent element24l, so thatonly cool pure smoke will pass through into the mouth of the smoker. By removing the closure 18, the nice or saliva impregnated cotton may be removed. and a fresh piece substituted. Further, by separating themouth piece and sleeve from the stem, the pipe may be readily and thoroughly cleaned and thuskept in proper condition to insure a cool pure smoke.
The invention is susceptible of variouschanges in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is here in reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim. Having described the invention what is claimed is g A tobacco pipe including a bowl, a stem extending from the bowl, a mouth piece, a sleeve connecting the stem and mouth piece and holding said stern and mouth piece in spaced relation to provide a chamber, said sleeve having an opening therein and a closure for the opening, acontinuous smoke tube ex tending longitudinally through said chamber and having its opposite ends extending into the stem .and mouth piece and havingjan opening to provide communication with the chamber. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN JOSEPH PAPSON.
