It 'willbe seen that as thus constructed the ytwo-piecek bit is provided between its ends with a chamber or pocket to which the smoke passages to and from the bowl delivers, and through which the smoke must pass.` In the said pocket 5 is placed a valve member 13, Vwhich is of slightly less diameter than-the bore of the chamber 5, in. order that there maybe free passage between 4the valve member 13 and thewall of the chamber'. The said valve member 13 has a coned end 14 by preference, and a liat top-face 15, and such coned end seats in the valve-seat formed by the flared section 8 atthe point of union of the chamber 5 and smoke passage 7, so as to norm-ally close such passage 7. The said valve mem ber 13 is preferably made of a light absorptive substance, such, for example, as meerschaum, and at a point -removed from its lower end is provided with one `or more transverse passages or which connect with one 17 extending to the upper end of the valve member; the arrangement shown resulting in a cruciorm smoke passage with the vertical passage trapped at said valve member 13 is slightly shorter'than the chamber in which it is seated, so that it has a slight play back and forth' in the chamber 5 to close and 'open a passage above the flared valve-seat Sat the upper end of smoke passage 7.
When the pipe is in use, the said valve member 13, being 'of light material, will respond to suction on the bit, and lift, raising its con'ed'end 14 from the seat 8 andallowing the smoke to come from the bowl 2 by stem 3 and bit member l to chamber 5 this lifting ofthe valve member 13 at thesame time seating its upper dat end 15 against the inner flat wall 12 ofthe bit-member 9', so that smoke coming from Y to .chamber 5 can only pass to the passage 11 in bit-member 9 by traversing the passages 16 and 17 in the valve member 13. 1.. A pipe having a chambered bit, and a valve in said chamber havingA smoke-passages therein and normally 'closing the smoke-passage in said bit.' y
2.y A pipe having a chambered stem, and a .valveiin said chamber 1naving transverse and longitudinal smoke-passages therein and normally closing the smoke-passage in said bit. i
3. A lpipe having a chambered bit, and a valve in said chamberhaving a longitudinal passage extending partially therethrough,
. and a transverse passage entering said longitudinal passage; said valve normally closing f the smoke-passage in said bit.
4. A pipe having a chambered bit, and a valve in said chamber'closed at one en d and having a smoke-passage therein which delivers at the other end.y
5. A pipe havingy a chambered bit, and a valve closed at one end and having intertransverse and longitudinal smoke-passages which deliver at the other end.
6. A pipe having a chambered bit', and a valve in said chamber having a trapped smoke-passage delivering at one end thereof.
7. A pipe having a chambered bit, and a valve in said chamber havin a cruiform smoke-passage therein delivering at one end thereof. l
8. A pipe having a chambered bit, and a valve in said chamber having a cruciform smoke-passage therein which is trapped at one end and delivers to the bit passage at the other end. l 9. A pipe having a chambered bit, avalve` in said chamber having a trapped longitu-f dinal passage and a transverse passage passx ing diametrically through said valve and in-. tersecting said longitudinal passage.
10. A pipe having a chambered bit provided with a coned valve-seat at its lower end, a coned valve seated therein and normally closing'the smoke passage in said bit, a cruciform smoke-passage in said valve delivering at the top thereof, said valve having` a flat top seating snugly about the smoke passage when the valve is raised so as t'o confine the smoke to the bit passage.
11. A pipe having a chambered bit, a
valve in said chamber formed of absorbent' material and having a tortuous .smoke passage therethrough,said valve havin a closed lower end which normally closes t e smoke passage in the bit and having an open upper..end which delivers to the smoke passage in the bit. L
'12. A pipe having a chambered bit, a valve of absorbent material loosely fitting said chamber and having a, tortuous passage therein, said valve having a closed lower end which normally closes the smoke' passage in the bit,'and an open-upper end which delivers to the smoke passage in the bit.
13. A pi e having a chambered bit a, valve of ess length than the cham er' mounted therein and provided with a tortuous smoke passage therein, said valve having a closed lower end which normally closes the smoke passage in said bit, and an open upper end which delivers to the smokepassage in the bit.
