Description
A. TORRESE SMOKER S PIPE Dec. 8, 1931.

Hpbllo Torrese l i h WITNESSES r; 1, G
Patented Dec. 8, 1931 APOLLO TORRESE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA SIOKERS PIPE Application filed April 3,
My invention relates to smokers pipes and more particularly to pipes having means for trapping the liquid which collects in the smoke passages of all pipes.
13 Its object is to provide a pipe of this character from which such liquid maybe easily ejected. I
Thi object is attained by providing a pipe having a collecting chamber between the bowl and mouthpiece, a smoke conduit leading from the chamber to the bowl, a discharge conduit leading from the chamber to the outside of the pi e, and one-way valves on the conduits permitting smoke to be drawn from the bowl through the mouthpiece, and liquid to be ejected from the chamber, as illustrated by the embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through a pipe made inaccordance with my invention, and
Figure 2 an enlarged longitudinal section through one of the valves shown in Figure 1. The bowl 5 and stem 6'are formed integral and a mouthpiece 7 is joined to stem 6-by a ferrule 8, forming a chamber 9 in which saliva and juices from the tobacco may be trapped.
Qne end of a smoke conduit 10 communlcptes with the interior of the bowl and its other end extends into chamber 9 and has a check valve 11 mounted thereon. One end of a discharge conduit 12 communicates with chamber 9 and its other end extends outside the bowl and has a check valve 13 mounted thereon which is a duplicate of check valve 11. Each check valve consists of a ball 14 held against the end of the conduit by a spring 15 contained in an aperturedcap lfi'which slides over the end of the conduit and abuts a sto secured to or formed on the conduit. In F: re 2, the stop 17 is shown as a separate mug pressed onto the conduit but may as readily be a ridge formed by upsetting similar stop 18-011 conduit 12.
When the bowl of the dpipe is filled with tobacco, it may be lighte by drawing upon the mouthpiece in the customary manner as the suction thus created will lift ball 14: from its seat and allow smoke to be drawn through the walls of the conduit. Valve 13 abuts a 1928. Serial no. 268,891.
conduit 10 and apertures 19 in cap 16. Any u1ces or moisture formed in the bowl or in conduit 10 will pass through apertures 19 into chamber 9 and be trapped therein due to the diameter of the chamber being so much greater than the diameter of the 'vent 20 in the mouthpiece. Whenever any liquid has By blowingthrough the mouthpiece after each pipeful of tobacco is consumed, it is found that the pipe will remain in a serviceable condition over an exceptionally long period without further cleaning. Should 7 particles of tobacco lodge in conduit 10 or conduit 12 become fouled through neglect,
they may be cleaned by slipping the check valves off their ends and running a pipe cleaner through them.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that modifications may be made without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am atdiberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim '1. A smokers pipe including an integral bowl and stem, a mouthpiece, a ferrule joining the stem and mouthpiece and forming a chamber therebetween, a smoke conduit leading from the bowl to the chamber, a discharge conduit leading from the chamber in the direction of the bowl, a check valve in the chamber end of the smoke conduit and a check valve in the discharge conduit.
2. A smokers pipe as set forth in claim 1 further characterized by means normally holding the valves in closed position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
APQLLO TORRESE.
