Description

. R". T. HARE; Adjusiahle-Best for the Armswhile Firing Guns.
No. 167,169 Patented Aug. 31,1875.
r Sa acens RICHARD T. HARE, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN ADJUSTABLE RESTS FOR THE ARM WHlLE FIRING GUNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. il7.,il6, dated- August 31, 1875; application filed June 30, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Brennan T. HARE, of Springfield, county of Hanipden, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Adjustable Rest forSupportingtheArm in the act of Aiming and Firing Guns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation.
My invention consists in an adjustable rest for supporting the arm in aiming and firing guns, constructed substantially as herein set forth.
A in the accompanying drawing represents a segment of a belt which surrounds the body, and may be secured by buckle or in any other convenient manner. Upon this belt A is fitted a slide, C, upon which slide is mounted the rest proper. Projecting from the surface of this slide 0 is a stud, l), to which is pivoted a stem, E. To this stem E is titted a sliding tube, F, provided with a set screw, G, by which it is secured at any desired point upon the stem, remaining fixed by means of this setscrew. To the upper end of the sliding tube F is secured thecurved rest I, for supporting the arm, which is represented as being a segment of a circle. This rest may be covered with rubber, on, leather, cloth, or other fibrous material, to render it more agreeable in use,
though this covering is not indispensable to the use of the rest.
By pivoting the stem E to the stud D, projecting from the slide, and fitting the sliding tube with a round stem, E, the rest becomes adjustable in the difi'erent directions required in the act of aiming and firing a gun.
lVithout departing from my inveutiiou, however, and if preferred, the rest I may be pivoted so as to revolve upon the end of the sliding tube; and instead of the stud D pr0- jectiug from the slide C, a knuckle or unlversal joint might be substituted, which would permit the stem of the rest to assume any angle required, and in any direction, by simply moving the arm.
To use this rest in aiming and firing guns, the belt is' secured around the body at the waist, the sliding tube set so as to elevate the curved rest to the desired height, when the arm near the elbow is placed thereon, thereby relieving it of nearly the entire weight of the gun, and adding much to the accuracy of firing.
Having thus fully described my invention for supporting the arm in tiring guns, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An adjustable rest for supporting the arm in aiming and firing guns, constructed so as to receive the weight and support the arm at or near the elbow in a direct or straight line from the body, substantially as herein described.
RICHARD T. HARE.
