SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 612,298, dated October 11, 1898.

Be it known that I, AUGUST WILLIAM ZU- BERBIER, of Logan, in the county of Redwood and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Gun-Support, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a gun carrier or rest adapted to be worn by a person out hunting and in which a gun may be balanced or supported while being carried, relieving the gunner from the fatigue incident upon carrying the gun in the hand in position for instant use without such support or in the usual way.

Another object of the invention is to so construct the device that it will be simple, durable, and economic, and so that the gun may be expeditiously removed or lifted from the holder or support, the gun when so carried being just as available for quick iiring as when carried in front of the person in the customary way.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to behad to the accompanying drawings, formingapart of this speciication; in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a view illustrating the device in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the device removed from the person, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the support portion of the device adapted to receive the gun.

A represents a strap which is adapted to be passed over the shoulder of the hunter and to hang at one side of the person. The strap consists of two

principal members

10 and 11, which are made to converge at their lower ends. One of the members, the member 10, preferably, is divided, and the divided parts are adj ustably connected by a buckle 12 or a like device. The gun-support B is located where the members of the strap converge, virtually an integral portion of the strap.

The support portion or section B comprises a shank 13, adapted to rest near the hip of the person wearing the device, an upwardlyextending shorter member 14, parallel with the shank, and a connecting member 15, the supporting section or portion B being thus given somewhat the shape of ahook, the bottom portion whereof is flat, and the distance between the members 13 and 14- of the supporting-section of the carrier is such as t'o admit of thelock portion ofthe gun being neatly received therein.

The supporting-section B is constructed as shown in Fig. 3, consisting of a body 16, of metal or other rigid material, and a covering 17, of leather, preferably inclosing the body. The covering 17 is a continuation of the contracted portion of the strap A.

Vhen the gun is placed in the supportingsection B of the carrier, it may be readily balanced therein, the weight being supported by the shoulders, as .shown in Fig. 1, and the fatigue caused in the muscles of the arm in carrying the gun in the hands, as is usual, is

obviated, and therefore greater accuracy in aiming is secured.

The device in no manner interferes with the manipulation of the gun in quick shooting, since the gun may be lifted from its support'and brought to the shoulder in position for firing as quickly as though the gun were being carried in the usual way. In hunting after the gunner has carried his gun for a oonsiderable length of time in the usual way the muscles of the arms become naturally strained and, indeed, the whole body so tired as sometimes to impair the steadiness of the aim, whereas when the device above described is used to support the gun the muscles of the arms are fresh and untired and the aim at the end of a number of hours or at the end of the days shooting should be as correct as when iirst starting out.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl A gun-support, consisting of an adjustable inelastic strap adapted to pass around the shoulders and whose members converge and meet at their lower ends, being continued for a short distanceafter meeting, and a supporting section or hook of rigid material shaped to receive the middle section of a gun, said hook being held between the meeting ends of the strap and inclosed by the same, whereby a covering is formed for said hook, as and for the purpose set forth.
