GARMENT HANGER Filed May 15 1926 l/VVENZ'UR Patented May 8, 1928.
UNITED STATES :rosnrn RALPH TRETHEWEY, or xmnnnnnt, nn crrsn COLUMBIA, onmnn.
GARMENT Hansen.
Application filed ma 15,
My present invention relates to improve ments in a garment hanger appertaining particularly to a rack for holding hats, coats, cloaks, umbrellas and the like adapted to be applied to the back of a pevv, opera seat or other vertical surface.
An object to provide a garment sup port of this kind that collapsible to occupy a minimum of space when not in use and adequately accommodate ones heavy outer wraps, such as a coat or cloak and hat.
A further object is to provide such a device that will support the garments in close proximity to the vertical surface to which it is applied without creasing or otherwise damaging the same, that will readily receive the several articles of apparel designed to he supported. thereby, and from which such garments may be conveniently removed;
A still further object is the provision of such a device wherein the number of parts are few, the construction simpleand the cost of production low, the Whole being rendered commercially desirable. 1
To the accomplishment of these and related objects as may become apparent, my invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as shall be hereinafter more fully; described illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
So that the device may be best understood and more readily described, attached drawings of a possible mechanical expression are to be considered as forming a part of this disclosure and in these Fig. 1 is a perspective view ofa preferred embodiment, the same being shown in operative position; and v Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof in closed position, part of the body being broken away.
Referring pzu'tieularly to these drawings wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views, the numeral 3 indicates a frame.
This frame will preferably be stamped from sheet metal and formed a shallow channel 4 having an extension 5 of the base continuing at one side and don-bled back on itself, the arms of the channel being terminally flanged outwardly, as at 6, to provide fastening ribs by which said hanger may be applied to any desired vertical surface having the channel disposed horizontally and the base continuation thereof on the upper 1926. side. An elongated slot 8 is cut in the base of the channel extending in Width upwardly from flush with the lower edge or arm of thechannel 4;. The shelf thus formed is indented near an end as at 9 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
A prop arm 10 is normally received in the groove, formed by and disposed-between the upwardly extending base extension 5 and the upper arm flange 6 of the channel 4; one end thereof being hingedly connected. as at 11 to a vertical pivotal post 12 journalled in the arms of the channel 4. This prop arm 10 hinging vertically in the post 12 may pivot to one side thereon to lie horizontally in the frame groove and through an angle of something less than 180, to stop and be supported at an incline on the other side of said post. A notch 13 is cut in the extension 5 in registry with said post 12 to accommodated this-prop when thesame is hinged to the side ofthe post designed to support it i at an incline and the said post is turned through a right angle so that the said arm extends outwardly from the hanger supporting surface.
A pair of spaced arms pivoted between the arms of the channel 4 are designed to hinge horizontally outwardly through the elongated slot 8 into operative position. One of these arms is pivoted near an end of this slot so that when hinged perpendicularly to the vertical surface it engages and is stopped by theadjaeent end ofthe slot 8. A bar 16 is hinged to the free end of this arm 15 having a free end 11 adapted to engage and be removably supported the free end of the remote and second arm 15, an arcuate bum cated tongue "18 being formed terminally on this second arm 15 to receive the free end 17 of the bar 16 which is provided with registering arcuate grooves 19 on both the upper and lower sides. Near their adjoining ends, both the bar 16 and the second of the arms 15 have small depending knobs 20. When closed, thearms 15 and bar 16 are housed within the channel 4, entering through the slot 8 in this position the knobs 20 are accommodated by the notch 9 and are consequently available and conveniently disposed when it is desired to open thishanger into operative position. To maintain the bar 16in its normally closed position in the slot 8, I provide a spring fastening ring 21 having an open side facingoutwardly, the ends'22 of the ring, at the opening, being doubled back on themselves and bent into alignment in opposite directions, passing through the spaced arms of the channel if The ring thus presents to the slot opening a pair of spaced spring jaws adapted to receive the bar 16, for fastening purposes, when closed.
The structure of the device being described in detail, the modus operandi thereof is now set forth z ln closed and inoperative position, the prop arm disposed horizontally lies compactly and out of the way in the extension and flange formed groove Whig thehinged arms and the bar supported thereby are all hinged into the channel tlu'ouglrthe elongated slot, the depending knobs extending through the notch being alone exposed. In use, the prop arm is hinged in its post through the entire available angle of between and 180 and the post simultaneously pivoted at right angles so that the prop arm extends outwardly and upwardly as a supporting finger to receive a hat and scarf or the like, the same being disposed in the notch in the base extension there located to receive said arm. The bar on its hinged arm and the free arm are then hinged outwardly, disconnectedly, and the former is ready to receive a coat, cloak or other heavy outer wrap and following the placement and reception thereof is hinged to engage the bifurcated end of the free knobcarrying arm, in which position it is supported horizontally, parallel with the frame and in close proximity to the same. Thus the outer and removable wraps are con veniently and compactly supported without injury to the garments and in a way that does not require space ordinarily used or encroach on the comfort or freedom of the person.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will. be manifest that a garment hanger is provided which will fulfill all the necessary requirements of such a device, but as'many changes could be made in the above description and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention constructed within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matters con tained inthe said accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
