PALM PROTECTOR.

This invention relates to palm protectors, and particularly to such protectors for use in fruit cutting and pitting operations. In canning factories the halving and pitting of such fruits as peaches is a manual operation. The peach is ordinarily held in the palm of the lefthand and the operating knife in the right hand. After the knife has encircled the peach and the peach is halved, the pit. or stone is left in one of the halves. This pit is removed by forcing the knife or other suitable instrument thereunder and prying the stone out. In this operation, as well as the cutting and other operations necessary, the palm of the left hand is often seriously injured and is ordinarily considerably bruised by the knife. It is the primary object of my invention to provide an improved palm protector and an improved method of making the same, wherein such injury and bruising of the palm is avoided.

In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated certain specific embodiments of my invention, but it will be understood that the invention can be otherwise embodied and that the drawing is not to be construed as defining or limiting the scope of the invention, the claims appended to this specification being relied upon for that purpose.

Referring to the figures of the drawing,

Fig. 1 is an elevation of my improved palm protector, showing the same in use;

Fig. 2 shows the same in open position;

Fig. 3 illustrates the cutting or stamping from which the protector is made;

Fig. 4 is an elevation of a somewhat modified form of palm protector comprised within the scope of my invention;

Fig. 5 shows the same in open position.

My improved palm protector comprises a front portion, a rear portion, and a reinforcing portion co-operating with the front portion for protecting the palm of the hand. The protector can be made in Va rious ways within the scope of my invention. In Figs. 1, 2, and 3 I have illustrated the three portions as formed in a single piece. In Figs. 4 and 5 I have illustrated the same as formed in two pieces. The protector or the various parts thereof is preferably made of white buckskin leather, although it will be clearly understood that the material from which the protector 1s made not an essential part of the invention.

The palm protector shown in Figs. 1, 2, i

and 3 comprises a front portion 1, arear portion 2,, and a reinforcing portion 3. These three portions are cut or stamped in a single flat piece as illustrated in Fig. 3. The reinforcing portion 3 is thereafter folded on the line 4 to overlap the rear portion 2. The front portion 1 is then folded onthe line 5 to overlap the reinforcing portion 3. The end o of the front portion is stitched at are the portions 2 and 3 adjacent their junction. The front and rear portions are respectively provided with fastening means. as the strap 7 and buckle 8 and the folding provides a thumb opening 9.

When the palm protector is in place on a hand as indicated in Fig. 1, substantially the entire area of the front or palm portion 1 is reinforced by the reinforcing portion 3 therebeneath. The stitching at 6 holds the reinforcing portion securely in place, and

the entire palm protector when buckled on the hand is held securely in place thereon. Furthermore, the arrangement of the various parts thereof is such that the protector readily adapts itself to the hand movements without in any manner hindering such movements.

In use the fruit to be operated on is held in the manner indicated in Fig. 1. In such view 10 indicates a peach half having a pit 11 therein. This peach is held in the palm on the reinforced portion of the protector. Should the knife slip or in any manner come in contact with the palm, no damage would result, since the same is fully protected. It will also be noted that the thumb opening 9 is so formed that the part of the port-ion 1 adjacent the opening extends well along upon the thumb in a manner protecting the same. This is clear from the illustration in Fig. 1.

The protector as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is very similar to that of Fig. 1. This protector comprises one piece 12 which forms the front portion of the protector and another piece 13 which forms the back portion 13 and reinforcing portion 13. The reinforcing portion 13 extends beneath the front portion and is stitched thereto at 14. A

projecting end 15 of the portion 13 isalso front piece 12 in a manner to engage over the thumb above the loop 15. The two ends of the protector may be held together on the hand by a strap 19 and buckle 20.

The use of this protector is the same as that shown in Fig. l. The portion 18,'however. projects further upon the thumb and protects same in the manner clearly illus trated in Fig. t. The ring 17 holds this portion in place, as will be understood.

Having thus; described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent ha:

1. A leather-like palm protector comprising the combination of a front portion. a rear portion. and a rein'l orcii'ig portion cooperating with the trout portion for protecting the palm of a hand, all three portions being: formed in one integral piece of leather or like material.

A leather-like palm protector comprising; a front portion, a rear portion and a reinforcing portion. the reinforcing and rear portions liningformed. of a single piece of material sewed to the front portion along one edge thereof with the reinforcing portion located tberebeneath, bridging means on the front and rear portions forming a thmnb-receiving opening whereby the pro teetor in use is anchored to the thumb with a portion thereof extending over and protecting the base and inner joint of the thumb, and cooperating means on the free ends of the front and rear portions: for connecting the-same together in a manner holding the protector on a hand.

A leather-like palm protector comprisng a tront portion, a rear portion and a reinforcing portion. the three portions being formed of a single piece of material lolded on lines between the portions to bring the reinforcing portion over the rear portion and the front portion over the reinforcing portion. and the rein forcing portion being sewed to the front portion in a position located therebeneath to protect the palm of a hand.
