Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,729, dated August 17, 1875 application filed Y January 27, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
B eit known that I, CHARLES R. SYKES, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Atmospheric Insufators, of which the following is a specification:
The present invention relates to a device for treating nasal, throat, and cat-arrhal difficulties; and its nature consists in a cylindrical tube, which is provided with a side nozzle for supplying it with liquid, with an inside tube communicating with the cylinder, and a discharge-bulb, whereby the liquid is conveyed to the nasal organs by atmospheric pressure, as the whole is hereinafter fully described and shown.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section ofy my improvement in insuftlators 5 Fig. 2, a broken plan view thereof, showing particularly the nozzle; Fig. 3, cross-section on line x, Fig. l.
A represents a cylinder, which is made of glass or other suitable material, and provided with a side nozzle, B, for illing it, with a conduit-tube, C, and a discharge-bulb, D. The side b of the nozzle is higher than the opposite side for convenience of pouring in liquid from a vial, bottle, spoon, or glass. The cylinder at E is enlarged to give additional strength to the device, and to receive any sediment there may be in the liquid, and prevent it from entering the nostrils. The neck F,
where the conduit-tube C joins it, is very thick and strong, whereby breakage at that point is not liable to occur.
To use the insufiator, hold the nozzle B in position to be filled with the inhalant to be used; then place the bulb in the nostril and draw in the breath, and the atmosphere will force the liquidinto the nose.
I am aware that John H. Yates and Charles R. Treat, of Sharon, Wisconsin, have invented a nasal inhaler having an outer case, a partition extending from side to side longitudinally of the same, and a side aperture for the admission of air to the space contained between one side of the said partition and the said outer case. This I do not claim nor do I claim, broadly, the combination, in a nasal inhaler, of an outer case, a partition dividing the same longitudinally, and a lateral aperture admitting air to one side of said partition near the open end of the inhaler.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. The combination of the outer cylindrical case A, the central or inner tube C, and lateral opening B in the single outer tube near its open end, substantially as described and shown.
2. The cylinder A, nozzle B, conduit-pipe C, bulb D, the neck F, and enlarged part E, as and for the purpose set forth.
