Description

Ap ril 10, 1928. v 1,665,449
. v H. A. DRAKE WOODEN BOAT OR DRAG Filed Dec. 17, 1925 Patented Apr. 10, 1928.
UNITED STATES HARRY A. DRAKE OF WEST NYACK, NEW YORK.
WOODEN BOAT OR DRAG.
Application filed December 17, 1925. Serial No. 76,049.
This inventionrelates to improvements in boats or drags such as are adapted for use in transporting stone, gravel andthe like,- one object of the invention being to provide a boat or drag which shall be constructed of wood to the exclusion of metallic fastening means and employing no metal whatsoever with the exception of the drawbar or bars, and with the possible exception of the draw M18. P lVith this object in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a boat or drag embodying my improvements.
Figure 2 is an end elevation section of the same.
Figure 3 is a side elevation.
Figure 1 is a view of one of the removable Sideboards, and
Figure 5 is a View showing a modification.
Figs. 6 and T are enlarged detail sections.
My improved boat or drag comprises a plurality of floor planks 1, 2 and 3 or any other desired number of such planks and these planks are connected together by means of dowel pins 4 which enter sockets in edge portions of the planks. At the sides of the floor structure, beveled wooden side beams 5 are placed upon the side portions of said floor structure and are secured thereto by wooden dowel pins 6 which extend, preferably in slanting directions through said side beams and the side floor planks. Each of these wooden pins is split at one end and the split portion receives a wedge 7 whereby it is securely clamped in place. The side beams 5 may also be provided with sockets 8 to receive pins 9 secured to and depending from sideboards 10 when said sideboards are used to increase the capacity of the boat or drag. At respective ends of the boat or drag, a transverse Wooden beam 13 is located upon the end portions of the floor secured thereto by means of wooden pins 14 in the same manner as the side beams 5 are secured in place. The forward edge porstructure and tion of each transverse beam 13 is preferably beveled as at 15. Centrally between the ends of each transverse beam 13, the same is provided in its under face with a recess 16 which receives a drawbar or link 17, the latter engaging at its inner end a draw-pin 18 of wood or other suitable material constructed in the same manner as the pins 6 and 14 and preferably disposed in an inclined position. Theforward end of each draftbar or link 17 projects beyond the forward edge of the transverse beam 13 for connection with suitable draft means or the draftbar or link of another boator drag.
When the boat is to be used as a single unit, the beam 13 might be displaced at one end of the unit, by a cross-beam 11 secured upon the floor structure by means of wooden pins 12 constructed and employed in the same manner as are the pins 6.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A boat or drag comprising wooden floor members, transverse wooden beams at re spective ends of said floor members, wooden pins securing said transverse wooden beams in place, a draft pin carried by each of said wooden transverse beams, and draft links disposed loosely between the floor and the end beams and engaged around the respective draft pins.
2. A boat or drag consisting ofthe flat floor members arranged side by side, means engaged in opposed edges of the members to connect the members, the upper surfaces of the members. being entirely free of projections and the end edges of said members being beveled downwardly, end beams secured upon upper surfaces of floor members at the ends of the same, said beams having longitudinally extending recesses in their undersides, draft links fitted freely in said recesses, and pins in the end beams engaged in said links.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
HARRY A. DRAKE.
