To all whom t may concern Be it known tha't l, DAVID H. Pnnvnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at llrewer, in the county of lenobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful ln'iprovements in Spurred Pickeroons, of which the following is a specifiverzuim.
'ilhis invention relates to a spurred pickeroon for use in handling pulp wood, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a pickeroon having means whereby the pulp wood can be pushed or pulled, under such conditions materially eX- pediting the handling of a length of pulp wood when occasion requires.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a spurred pickeroon, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly efiicient and convenien; in its use, readily assenibled, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
lilith the foregoing and other objects in view, the .invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter morev specifically de,- scribed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
ln 'the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevation of a spurred piclrcroon, in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 'is a fragmentary View, 'in side elevation, upon an enlarged scale, lof a spurred fpicleroon in 'accordance with this invention. y
Figure is a fragmentary vview loo-king towards the rear side of the pickeroon. 4
Figure /l is an inverted plan view of the spurred pickeroon.
A spurred pickeroon, in accordance with this invention, comprises a handle member referred to generally by the reference character 1, and a head referred to Lgenerally by the reference character 2, and which is mounted on one end of the handle member 1, the latter being of the desired length and provided with a gripping portion 3 and a wedge-shaped entering portion t, which is mounted in the head 2 and secured therein by a headed wedge 4L engaging therein and abutting against the outer side edge of lthe head 2. f i
Thehead 2 comprises a wedge-shaped body portion 5 formed therethrough with an opening G providing what may `be termed a wedge-shaped socket for the entering portion t of the handle member 1. rlhe rearl end 7 of the body portion 5 is of greater width than the forward end 8 thereof. The body portion 5 is `of a length materially 4greater than its greatest width, and increases in width from its forward towards its rear end.
Formed integral with the forward end S of the body portion 5 `is a pick vpoii'1t9of substantial length, having' its upper edge 10 incliningdownwardlf7 with respect tothe upper edgey 11 of the body portion 5. lThe lower edge12 of the point 9 inclines slightly downwardly with respect to the body portion 5 but the inclination is not as greatas the inclination of the upper edge 10. rlhe edges 10 and 11 merge into each 'other to provide a point 13. By constructing` the pickingpoint 9 in the manner as stated, it tapers inra direction forwardly from 'the forward end of the body portion 5, extends laterally in a forward direction from and is disposed at right angles with respect 'to the head2.
Foi-med integral with the rear end 7 of the body portion 5 is a laterally entendin'g base 14: for atapered spur 15 which is offset with respect to the body portion 5 and projects beyond the head of the 'wedge il which 'isfefxtended 'into Ithe handle member 1, or in other words, the spur 15 projects beyond the outer side `or top edge 11 of the body portion 5 and furthermore is disposed at an inclination with respect thereto. The base llvisforme'd integral with the outer portion 'of the vrear end of the head Q and lgradually increases in width towards the outer side or top edge 11 of the body portion 5. The base 1l is arcuate incrossseetion and has its forward end yop'- posing the outer side or top edge of the body portion 5.
The pick point 9 is disposed substantially at right angles and the spur 15 at an acute angle with respect to the handle member 1.
The spur 15 is of materially less length than the length of the pick point 9.
The providing of the head 2 with the pick point 9 and the spur 15 enables a pulling CII and pushing action to be had on a length of pulp wood, under such conditions expediting the handling thereof, o'r in other words, a pickeroon is set up which when used can be employed for either pulling or pushing the pulp wood.
It is thought that the many advantages of a spurred pickeroon, in accordance with this invention, can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood `that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is z- 1. An implement for the purpose set forth comprising a hollow wedge-shaped head adapted to be mounted on one end of a handle member, a one-piece laterally extending tapered pick point having its inner end integral with the forward end of and flush with the outer and inner sides of said head, said point inclining slightly towards the inner side of the head, a laterally extending spur base integral with the rear end of said head at the outer portion thereof, and a tapered spur integral with the forward side of said base and offset with respect to and projecting beyond the outer side of the head, said spur disposed at a slight outward inclination with respect to the vertical axis of the head.
2. An implement for the purpose set forth comprising a hollow wedge-shaped head, a handle member having its forward end mounted in said head, al one-piece laterally extending tapered pick point having its inner end integral with the forward end of and flush with the outer and inner sides of said head, said point inclining slightly towards the inner side of the head, a laterally extending spur base integral with the rear end of the head at the outer side thereof, a tapered spur integral with the forward side of said base and offset with respect to and projecting beyond the outer side of the head, said spur disposed at a slight outward inclination with respect to the longitudinal axis of the handle, `and means engaging in said member and abutting against the outer side of the head for connecting the latter and said member together.
3. An implement for the purpose set forth comprising a hollow head, a handle member having its forward end mounted in said head, a laterally extending tapered pick point integral with the fori'ard end of said head, a laterally extending spur base integral with the rear end of the head at the outer portion thereof, said base tapering towards the outer side of the head and arcuate in cross section, and a tapered spur integral with the forward side of the base, spaced from and projecting beyond the outer side of the head, said spur disposed at a slight outward inclination with respect to the longitudinal axis of the handle member.
4. An implement for the purpose set forth comprising a hollow head, a handle member having its forward end mounted in said head, a laterally extending tapered pick point integral with the forward end of said head, a laterally extending spur base integral with the rear end of the head at the outer portion thereof, said base tapering towards the outer side of the head and arcuate in cross section, a tapered spur integral with the forward side of the base, spaced laterally from and projecting beyond the outer side of the head, said spur disposed at a slight outward inclination with respect to the longitudinal axis of the handle member, and means engaging in said member and abutting against the outer side of the head for connecting` the latter and member together.
An implement for the purpose set forth comprising a head having its outer end of greater width than its rear end, said head l formed with a wedge-shaped opening for the reception of the forward end of a handle member, a laterally extending tapered pick point integral with the forward end of said head and inclining slightly towards the inner side of the head, a laterally extending spur base integral with the rear end of said head at the outer portion thereof, said base gradually increasing in width towards the outer side of the head and further arcuate in transverse section, the forward end of said base opposing the outer side of said head, and a spur integral with the forward end of the base, spaced laterally from and projecting beyond the outer side of the head, said spur disposed at a slight outward inclination with respect to the vertical axis of the head.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
