Description

Aprii 29, 1952 AS STOVE RESPECTIVELY Filed Feb. 10, 1949 Patented Apr. 29, 1952 OFFICE ARTICLE ADAPTED FOR USE AS TRAN S- PORT SLED, AS SLIP CONTAINER. TO

AS STOVE RESPECTIVEL Odd Magnus Magnussen, Oslo, Norway Application February 10, 1949, Serial No. 75,716 In Sweden March 13, 1948 4 Claims. (Cl. 280-19) The present invention relates to an article which may be used for three different purposes, viz. as transport pulkha, especially on snow, as a slip-container which may be dropped from aircraft and, in vertical position thereof on the ground, as oven, especially for heating of tents on cold days and nights, and also for cooking purposes.
According to the invention the new article consists essentially of an extended container of lon- Other features of the invention will become from the following description in connection with the drawings which by way of example illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 illustrates the container provided with traction means for use as a transport pulkha.
Fig. 1a illustrates a fragmentary corner portion of the rectangular container in transverse oven.
Figure 3 shows a vertical section through the end portion of the container and illustrates the door locking and controlling means thereof.
Figure 4 illustrates details of the closing and traction arrangement at the front or top end of the container.
Figure is a vertical section taken on line VV of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a plan view of the top of Figure 2.
The main body of the new article is generally designated by reference numeral l0. It consists of an extended container made of sheet metal, which is longitudinally corrugated for that part if of the container which is of square section. Below the bottom proper I2 of the container is provided a buffer l3 in the shape of a strong bail or shell with a side opening l4 therein. This member l3 buffers off shocks when the container is used as slip-container and serves as a foot when the container is used as oven.
One of the corrugated sides of the container is formed as a door l5 hinged at its front end (at l6). At its rear end said door l5 has attached thereto a strong lock spring l1 which may be snapped over the edge of the bottom l2 of the container. The free end of said spring is provided with a band which may with friction slide along the bottom l2 and finally be pressed below a transverse rib is provided on the underside of bottom [2, so that the door may be locked in entirely closed position, or maintained in more or less open position, which latter may be the case when the container is used as heating oven, in order to obtain more or less draught. A relatively long hand grip, suitably in the shape of a bail l9 may be swingably attached to the end of the lock spring H. To this spring is also attached a smaller ring 20 which is pulled when the door I5 is to be opened from entirely closed position, when the long bail has been swung into the buffer I 3. x
The front end portion of the container I0 is tapered and not corrugated as shown at 2| and goes over into a cylindrical portion 22 having an open end.
For use of the container as a transport pulkha the open end of portion 22 has to become closed and a traction rod arrangement to be attached thereto. For closing of the open end is used a and resilient bail 26, which is inserted through holes in members 25 and 22, as seen in Figure 5, the free ends 21 of said bail extending somewhat out of said holes.
At center of the bottom of cup 25 is provided an opening 28 through which extends a steel pin 29 the inner end portion of which has screwed or otherwise secured thereto a ball segment 30 the diameter of which is larger than that of the opening 28. The outer end portion of the steel pin 29 is secured to the end portion 3| of a traction rod 32 by nails 33. The pin 29 has secured thereto two diametrically opposite bladelike fins 34, the base lines 35 of the fins facing the cup 25. In said fins may be provided holes 35 for attachment of pulling ropes if a heavy load is to be transported.
The traction rod 32 may consist of two or more combined rod pieces (not shown) and is at its front end detachably connected to a forked bail 36, adapted to be attached to a traction harness. The several traction parts are given such dimensions that they may be placed within the container I B when the latter is transported on crafts or is used as slip-container.
Due to the ball and pin connection 30, 29 the container I 0, when used as pulkha, is entirely free to rotate about its axis in relation to the traction rod 32. But the container 10 and the traction rod 32 cannot be swung sidewards to an unlimited degree in relation to each other, since the bases 35 of the fins 34, in cooperation with the bottom of cup 25, limit such movements. The person pulling the container along by means of the traction rod therefore always has full con trol.
When the container is to be used as oven or heating furnace, for example within a tent, the container is placed in erect position, as indicated in Figure 2, of course after removal of cup 25, and a chimney tube 31, 31 is fitted on the cylindrical portion 22. Such chimney tube may, as indicated in Figure 2 consist of telescopic sections, and the top section 37' may be provided with a detachable disc 38 serving to support the top of a tent from the inner side thereof.
The level at which the disc 38 is placed may be adjusted in accordance with the height of the tent by means of a chain 38 secured at one end thereof vto the disc 38', passed through or over the top of the chimney and adjustably secured by inserting a suitable link of said chain in aslot 98" at the edge of the disc. In this manner the chimney may serve as a tent rod.
Within the container 10 is removably suspended abasket 39 of perforate metal sheet or of wire netting, by means of tiltable bails 40 and hooks 4|. Said basket is also provided with a bail 42 which may be swung down onto the top of the basket and serve to support cooking utensil when desired.
I claim:
1. A multi-purpose article adapted to be dropped from an aircraft comprising, an elongated container substantially rectangular in transverse section, said container having a longitudinally corrugated body portion, a door extending along one side of said body portion through which alternatively usable chimney and traction members are adapted to be passed for storage within or removal from the interior of said body portion, and a neck portion terminating in a top opening, a closure member for and detachably connected to said neck portion, said traction member including connection means at one end thereof for attachment to said closure member when the latter is connected to the neck portion of said container, and said chimney being formed at one end thereof for connection with said neck portion with said closure member removed to adapt said container when up-ended for use as a stove.
2. An article as defined in claim 1 wherein said closure member contains an aperture through which one end of said traction member is insertable, a coupling member having a rounded surface portion larger than said aperture attachable to said inserted traction member end, the rounded surface of said coupling member cooperating with the said aperture to unite said closure member and traction member end and permit'relative axial rotation therebetween, and a transverse member secured to said traction member end and cooperative with a face of said closure member for limiting swing movement of said traction member about the axis of said container.
3. An article as defined in claim 2 and which further includes a forked hip bail at the other endof said traction member.
4. An article. as defined in claim 1 wherein said closure member contains an aperture through whichone end of said traction member is insertable, a coupling member attachable to said inserted traction member end for uniting said traction member end and closure member, said traction member end and closure member being free for relative rotation about their longitudinal axes.
