Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawing.V 1 l i In carrying out the invention to Ornament the' surfaceof a back wall' for a radiant heater as'shown generally at l, the back wall is firstmolded of` a suitable mixture of fire clay to the general outline required.

.A mixture of fire clay and thelike ofr about the consistency of paste is then applied tothe surface of the back wall with Yany suitable tooly and Worked 'into' any de'-v sired design or configuration with proper tools Vor with the fingers.

' This composition is indicated at 2 and in cross section may assume -a configuration similar to that shown in Fig. 2, having alternate irregular valleys 3 and ribs 4f.

When the surface has hardened a section taken substantially on sufficient-y ly, it'mayy be painted in `any desired manner. If desired, the back' wall may be first' baked or burned in a kiln before the paint is applied, or the paint may be applied and Vtheback wall afterwards burned, depending upon the nature of the paint used.` y

Very artistic resultspmaybe obtained by painting the entire vsurface with one, color and after the same has dried, a coat of a' different color, preferably darker, is applied to the entire surface, and while Wet the flat surfaces 5 are wiped' off, leaving the lighter color thereon, While the valleys remain darker or vice versa as desired.

While only onedesign of'ornamentation is illustratechit will be understood that by the use of different finishing instruments or tools a great number of artistic finishes may be easily formedlupon the surface.

Althoughv this Vfinish is described and illustrated as applied to the back walls for*A radiant heaters, it will beunderstood that.r the same is applicable to the radiants them-- selves, and is adaptable for ornamenting l l e.

I claim: I 1. The ornamenting process which conf sists in applying a Yplastic coating to a sur-` face to be Ornamented, forming ribs .and

valleys in said coating and rolling down the 'y high points of said ribs so that the edges thereof project over the valleys to produce an undercut effect.
