To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUDWIG L. BLAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes or Methods of Making VVall-Paper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved process or method of manufacturing wall paper with respect to the coloring thereof to produce a simulation of embossed or rough surface.
The process is directedparticularly to the method of applying and handling the colors to produce the effect, and while any variation of'colors are contemplated for use, the effect to be gained is the direct result of and produced by an identical process.
In carrying out the processithe uncolored paper is first treated by applying thereto a coat of coloring by a coating machine or other uniform applicator, said coat, while wet, being stippled through the use of a suitable brush by hand in a well understood manner. After being allowed to dry thoroughly a second coat of coloring, but of a darker color than the first coat, is applied in the same or any accepted manner to secure a uniform spread, and the coat of darker color is also stippled through the use of a brush by hand as with the first coat. The effect of this treatment is that the lighter ground miscuously throughout the surface and by the mingling of the darker color gives light and shadowy effects that will cause the finished paper to appear as or of a rough surface.

What is claimed is:
The herein described process of coloring wall paper consisting in applying a uniform coat of color to the paper and hand stippling the same irregularly while wet, allowing said coat to dry, applying a coat of darker color in a uniform manner and hand stippling said coat while wet irregularly to permit the lighter ground color to appear in its stippled effect through the finishing coat in irregular configuration.
