RICHARD DE `PLANQUE, oF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
APLAQUE FOR PAINTING AND DECORATION.
SPECIFICATION forming' To all lwhom ttfmay concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD DE PLANQUE, a subject ofIrussia, (having declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States,) have invented a new and useful Im-` provement in Plaques or Shapes for Painting and Decoration, which iniprovement is fully embodying my invention. in line .fr m, Fig. 1, enlarged.
-` stit'ening action of the glue.
set forthin the following speciiication and ac- V,companying drawings, in which- Fignres 1 and 2 are face views of plaques Fig. 3 1s a section .Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
Myinvention consists of a plaque formed, essentiall y, of Vpasteboard, bi nders7 cloth-boards, or -other similar paper material, prepared in such manner as to be light, durable, and cheap, and to possess other advantages, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a plaque, which may be circular, oval, or other desired shape for painting, ornamentation, and decoration generally.
'In preparing the plaque I take pasteboard, binders clotheboards, or other similar paper material, a, and cut the same into proper shape and saturate it with glue-water, after after which, while it is wet, it is stamped or pressed into a dishing'form, and when dry it will be found to retain its shape, owing to the The plaque is l-fnow coated on both sides with a compound of glue and Whiting, as at b b and applied thick to thevsidc which corresponds withV` the front or faceof the plaque, and said thick coating is sandpapered or otherwise treated or ground in order to have a uniform and smooth surpart of Letters Patent No. 231,657, dated August 31, 1880.
Application filed April 16.1880. (No model.)
face imparted to it, which surface then receives a finishing coat of turpentine and pigment, oil, paint, or other similar' material, and the plaque is ready for sale and use.
If desired the material a may have designs in relief or intaglio stamped on it, so that the finished plaque is similarly ornamented. It will be found that the article is light and durable, is without blisters, the surface is uniform and serviceable and may be washed, and readily takes and holds the painting, coloring, or other decorations without chipping, peeling, Ste., thereafter.
I am aware that plaques have been made of wood, which warps and cracks, and of terracotta, which is heavy, friable, and of an absorbent nature, all of which defects are remedied by my construction.
Having thus described my invention and stated the advantages thereof, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
