A `further object of the ,invention is to provide .a device adapted to control apair of skylightsdisposed upon opposite sides of the roof of abuilding, which will .permit of either or both of the said skylights being f opened fully, partially,.or wholly closed.
.A still further object of the invention is to provide a skylight operating mechanism in which 'one ofthe skylights is positively actuated at all times, while the other one is connected to the said operating mechanism by means ofa lostmotion connection, where- ,by various relative adjustments of the ftwo skylights may be obtained.

Referring more-particularly to the said drawings,.the numeral 10 indicates the upper portion ofa building, such for yexample as ,a factory .building Aof the .Well known metal construction, the ridge 11 of which has `pivotally secured to it, as at 12and 13, the skylight members, 14 and 15, respectively. These said `skylights may ,be lof any suitable construction, inasmuch as they themselves constitute no part of the .present invention, and they vare adapted tozbe swung to the various positions indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, by means of the actuating mechanism, which Awill now `be described.

shaft23, which latter shaft rigidly carries a chain wheel or pulley 24, over which passes rlhe said chain vas it fleaves one side of the wheel 24, .passes through a suitable chain guide 26, vcarried `by an extension 27 of the bracket member 18, aswill be clear from the drawings.
The shaft also carriesa pair of-operating arms or levers, 30 and 31, the .former of whichisrigidlysecured-to the said shaft in any ksuitable, manner, as by the pin 32,r
,while the latter arm 31 isjloosely .mounted `upon rthe said shaft and is `provided with theoppositely disposed shoulders 3,3, see Fig.
'6, which are adapted to be engaged by com Vpanion shoulders 34, formed upon collars 35,
' ally secured to it, as at 40, a connecting rod or link 41, the, other end of which is pivotallyconnected as at 42 to the skylight member 14. In like manner the extreme end of the arm or lever 31 has pivotally secured to it as at 43, one end of a connecting rod or link 44, the other end of which is pivotally connected as at 45 to the skylight member 15.
The operation of the device, is as follows. Assuming the parts to be in the full line position shown in Fig.A 1, wherein both skylight members, 14 and 15, are shown closed, if the right hand side of the chain 25, as seen in Fig. 6, is pulled downwardly, thereby rotating the chain wheel 24 in a clockwise direction, as viewed in the said figure, the motion will be transmitted through the shaft 23 and worm 22 to the. worm wheel 21, which will be vmoved in a counter-clockwise `direction, as viewed in Figs. 1 and 5. This movement of the wheel 21 may be transmitted through the shaft 2() to the arm 30, the outer end of which will move upwardly in a counter-clockwise direction to successively assume the positions indicated in dotted lines in Fig. -1 and designated respectively by the reference characters 30 and 30". This movement of the said armv will be trans- "mitted through connecting link 41 to the` `ment has been transmitted to the arm 31,
due-to the fact that the parts have been so assembled that the shoulders 34 of the collars 35 have not yetl engaged the shoulders 33 of the said arm. However, when the uppermost position of the skylight V14 is reached, the said shoulders will engage so that any further movement of the shaft 2O will transmit motion to the arm 31, which motion will be in turn transmitted through the connectinglink 44t0 the skylight member 15. The parts are so designed and constructed that the shoulders 34 will engage the shoulders 33 at thesame time the skylight 14 reaches its highest position, due to i the alignment of the lever30 with the connecting rod 41, as indicated by the dotted line position 30 ofthe said lever, so that any further counter-clockwise movement of this latter lever will begin to lower the 4said sky light 14. It thus results that from this point on, in the movement of the shaft 20,
the skylight 14 will be lowered, while the,
skylight 15 willbe raised.
. it will be noted that dueto the positive connections between the skylight 14 and the shaft 20, that the said skylight is at all times positively raised or lowered. On the other hand, due. to the lost motion provided in the connections between the skylight 15 and the shaft 20, this skylight is positively raised, but will be lowered bythe force of gravity.
It will also be apparent that in viewV of the use of the force of gravity to lower the skylight 15, that the said skylight would not be lowered if the arm 31 should become aligned with the connecting link 44, and in order to pre-Vent this, the extreme end of the said arm 31 is provided with a lug 50, `see Figs.` (i and 7, which is adapted to be en-` gaged by the sides of the connecting link 44 when a certain predetermined point is reached, toprevent further movement of the parts. direction of rotation of the shafts 2O and 23 in order to lower the skylight 15, which will v also have the effect of lowering the skylight 14 thereafter. i
It will also be noted that the parts will be held in any adjusted position, due tothe employment of the worm drive, since such a drive is substantiallyirreversible and will efficiently lock the parts in any adjusted position.
While oneform of the invention has been "illustrated and described, it is obvious that those skilled in the art Vmay vary the details of construction as well as the arrangement of parts, without departing from the 1t is thus necessary to reverse the ico spirit of the invention, and'therefore it is Y not wished to be limited tothe above disclosure except as may be required by the Y accompanying claims.
What is claimed is: l 1 1. The combinationfwith a pair 4of closures'of a closure operatingmechanism comprising a shaft; a 'positive connection between said shaftand one of said closures for opening and closing-the same; a connection providing lost motion between said shaft and the other of said closures whereby it may be opened and closed independentlyV of said first named closure,and means for limiting the movement of one of said connections in one direction. 4 y .l

A device for operating a pair of skylights comprising a shaft; a worm and worm wheel for' driving said shaft; an arm rigidly carried by said shaft; a second arm loosely carried by said shaft, provided with a shoulder; a collar rigidly carried by said shaft, provided with a shoulder adapted to engage said first named shoulder to transwith, the otherl ofsaid arms being provided with a shoulder, and means carried by the shaft and adapted to cooperate with the vshoulder to permit of lost motion between said arm and shaft, and connections between said arms and skylights.
7. A device for operating a pair of skylights comprising a. shaft, means for driving said shaft, an arm rigidly carried by said shaft, a second arm loosely carried by said shaft provided with a shoulder, a collar rigidly carried by said shaft and adapted to engage said shoulder to transmit motion to the second arm, said shoulder and collar being arranged to permit a predetermined amount of lost motion between the said arm and shaft, and connections between said arms and skylights. y
