Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFEIcE.
ALBERT K. MANSFIELD, OF STEUBENVILLE, OHIO.
WINDOW-OPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,621, dated July 6, 1880.
Application filed December 24, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT K. MANSFIELD, of Steubenville, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a more simple and perfect apparatus for opening, and closing the upper windows or ventilators of passenger-cars when these ventilators are substantially of the kind shown in the drawlngs.
Figure 1 is an oblique view, showing both windows closed, and Fig. 2 is a plan, showing" one window open and the other closed.
The ventilators referredto are long narrow windows W W, hinged at their ends. The opener is fastened to the frame-work F between two of the windows, which are hinged at opposite ends, and is connected with the windows in such a way that by turning the vertical rod R, by means of the handle H, either of the windows may be opened while the other is held closed, or both may be closed at the same time.
S is the stand, which contains bearings for the vertical rod. K is a crank attached to the top of the vertical rod. 0 O is a double clevis, pivoted at its center on the end of the crank,
and L L are links connecting the ends of the double clevis with the windows.
It is desirable to open only one of the windows at the same time. according to which direction the car is moving in. This is commonly accomplished by independent -acting openers applied to each window, each opener being constructed substantially the same as mine, with the exception of the double clevis G O. In the openers referred to a link, L, connects the window directly with the end of the crank.
In combining, two of these openers in one I have introduced the double clevis, which allows the crank and two links to turn about three centers all at the same time.
I am aware that windows have been hung on opposite ends before for purposes of carventilation. I therefore do not claim this.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a double-acting window or ventilator opener, ot' crank K, double clevis O, and links L L, substantially as described.
ALBERT K. MANSFIELD.
