Description

G. VIRNEBURG SWIMMING GLOVE Filed Dec. 19, 1924 the wrist.
Patented Mar. 27, 1928. H
GEORGE vmnnnnne,
on NEW YORK, n. 'Y. I
SWIMMING GLOVE.
Application filed December 19,1924. Serial No. 756,860.
The object of this invention is to provide 1 a swimming glove of simple construction and yet one that will be strong and serviceable, but, the most important object of the invention is to provide ployed by anyone, almost regardless of the size of the hand. 4
Swimming gloves have been known in the past and some have been produced of: the shape and size similar to the glove here shown and described, but, these gloves have not found a general use, for the reason that insuiiicient care has been taken in their. construction, with the result that they have not withstood the strenuous duties they are slit 5, the glove opening,
called upon to perform.
Another reason for the failure of these gloves to become generally adapted is that, in the past, it has been found necessary to make them of different sizes, to such an extent that the cost of construction has been increased as well as the cost of marketing.
Another reason for the failure of swimming gloves, in the past and one that has rcceivei'i my special attention, is, that swimmers require that the swimming glove fit snugly around the wrist and that it have the feeling of security, when in'use.
Ji'lOVQS fastened by means of buttons or snaps fail in this most important detail.
Other advantages of, my invention and the construction by which all of these advantages are attained will beset forth as the specification progresses and the accompanying drawing should be referred to for acomplete understanding of the specification which follows.
in the drawmg:
1* 1g. 1, is a View in elevation, showing my glove tightly closed.
Fig. 2, is a view, partly in section. This view shows the back of the glove and the fractured portions show the construction.
Fig. 3, is a sectional view of a small part, showing the method of reinforcing.
Fig. i, is a similar view of the part directly opposite.
Fig. 5, is a view similar to that'shown in Fig. 3, but having a different type of fastening.
Fig. '6, is a sectional view of one edge at This view is taken on the line 6 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in all the figures where they appear.
a glove of universal application, that is a glove that may be em- My glove is formed of two main portions of flexible material, preferably alight fabric and the twoma'in portions are of similar shape and size. These two main portions are shown at-l'and 2 in Figs. 1 and 2 and after being connected in a suitable man:
A 1,664,187 PATENT OFFICE- nor are secured together by a row of stitches "3, extending around the entire outline of the glove with the exception of a small portion,
which will provide an opening for the insertion of the hand. A second row of stitches 4, which also secures the main parts 1 and 2, serves todivide the gloveup into finger recesses. V v I In the portion 1, which I may refer tone the front member, I provide an elongated and which makes it possible to insert the hand'intotheglove with little difliculty and in the back memher 2, I provide a plurality of small slits or openings as shown at 6, 7, 8 and 9, suitably bound with stitching as shown at :10. These openings ventilate the glove and allow. the free ingress of water into the glove and the equally free egress of water from the glove;
Upon the wrist of my glove or upon that portion which will form the wrist, I place a reinforcing band as shown at 10 and this is important as the glovewill be made of material, light of weight and thin'of texture.
I call attention to the webs 11, 12 and 13 and 1s, between the fingers and between the fingers and thumb portion of theglove.
Such webs, are, however, common in swimming gloves.
I call particular attention to the construction of this glove and it will be noted, as shown at 15 in Fig. 2,;that, the edges of each part are turned in prior to stitching and I further call attention to the construction of the wrist portion of the glove where it will be noted that the material of:eaoh part is turned inwardly as shown at 16and the parts arethen secured together, the wrist band 10 being secured to the inwardly turned portion 16 of the glove, thu-s adding strength.
The construction of my glove can be fully I appreciated by referring to Figs. 3 to 6 in elusive, where the reinforcements are definitely shown.
To be successful a swimming glove must be adjustable to a very great extent and readily secured or loosened. For this reason, buttons or clasps are not found desirable, not only because of their lack of adjustment,
but because they cannot be readily engaged or separated.
glove that lacks adjustment requiresthat such glove shall be bought to fit. This requires the carrying of numerous sizes by the dealer and also increases the cost of manufacture. As these gloves are, at best, a low priced article, their construction must be so simplified that unnecessary expense shall never be assumed.
With these ideas in mind, I have designed the fastening means showm which consists of arplural ity of buttons 17 and 18, secured to the glove in a suitable manner andunder one button I secure the end of a cord 19,
shown inFig. 1.
The cord 19 maybe sufiiciently long to which may be wrapped about the buttons as- .a'llow' a very great'range of adjustment and any type of button may be used, such as the post secured button 20, shown in Fig. 5.
'Modifications may be made Within the scope of the appended claimwithout departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of the invention.
Having carefully and fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to obtain 1s A swimming glove formed of two pieces of flexible material of equal size and similar outline, said pieces being secured together and a reinforced wrist band formed by having the material of each part folded up- Wardly and inwardly, prior-to the oin1ng of the parts together and securingan additional flexible member exterior of said parts and around said wrist portion, said glove having a button arranged adjacent to each end of said additional flexible reinforcing memher and a cord between said buttons for drawing them toward each other in adjustable relation.
Signed at thecity, county and State of -York this 3rd day of December, 1924.
