CHARLES F. HERRIOK, OF INDEPENDENCE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN REVERSIBLE LATCHES FOR CUPBOARDS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,368, dated August 3, 1875; application filed June 26, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. O. F. HERRIGK, of Independence, in the county of Buchanan and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cupboard-Latches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of a reversible latch for cupboards, show-cases, and other articles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a front view of a door and .doorframe with my reversible latch attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same through the line 00 00, Fig. 1. Fig.3 is an interior view of the latch-case, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a part thereof.
A represents a frame, to one side of which the door B is hinged. On the front of the door, at the outer edge, is secured a plate, 0, provided with a knob, D. On the door-frame A, adjoining this plate, is secured a latchcase, E. G represents the latch, the inner end of which is made curved and beveled, and the outer end weighted, as shown. This latch is placed on the outside of the case E, and by a rivet, a, connected with a plate, b, on the inside, said rivet passing through a slot, 6, in the case. The plate?) is made triangular in form, with rounded corners, and when the latch hangs in its natural position the long side of the plate is against the outer edge of the case. In each of the top and bottom corners of the plate is a hole, as, and into the upper hole of the-plate is inserted a pin, y, which projects from one end of a plate or bar, d, the other or upper end of which is fastened by the top screw that fastens the case to the door-frame, the case being secured thereto by one screw at the top and another atthe bottom, as shown in Fig. 1.
It will thus be seen that the latch is suspended from the plate or bar d, and can be used either on the right or left side, as required, by simply changing the suspendingplate to the other corner of the triangular plate I). The plate I) need not necessarily be triangular, but simply of such form as will best answer the purpose and cover the slot t in the case, which is made irregular to allow the latch to swing, whichever side of the case is at the top.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the latch G and latch-case E, of the plate I), fastened by means of a rivet, a, to the latch, and provided with holes as x, and the suspending-plate d, provided with the pin y, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' CHARLES F. HERRIGK.
