LIGHTER FOR BURNERS OF RANGES.
Application filed December 21, 1926. Serial No. 156,159.
This invention relates to certain improvements in lighters for burners of ranges and is a continuation in part of all matter that is common to my pending application Serial No. 114,478, filed June 8, 1926. The primary object of the invention is providing a range with a lighting member extending from a burner in the open part of the range through the oven housing to an oven burner,
whereby the 'oven burner may be lighted from the external or main burner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a range having external burners and an oven burner having communication with the main burner, and a lighter having its outer end adjacent the main burner and its inner end adjacent the oven burner, whereby the latter burner may be lighted from the main burner.
A further object of the present improvement is providing a pipe between the main burner and the oven burner with a lighter that communicates with the pipe between the oven and main burner, whereby the vapor from the main burner enters the lighter and flows therethrough to the oven burner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a range with an oven burner and an external main burner communicating with each other by means of a pipe, and a lighter having an intermediate communication intermediately with the said pipe, whereby vapor flows in both directions, whereby fire flashes along the lighter from the mam burner to the oven burner.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a horizontalsection through a range with my improvement applied thereto. Figure 2 is an inverted plan view of the oven burner and main burner, the lighter shown in position for conveying fire from the main burner to the oven burner.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view on line 44 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a detached perspective view showing a portion of the ighter and that part which extends into the pipe connectmg the main burner and the oven burner.
In the several figures of the drawing, 1
indicates the open portion of a range and 2 the wall of an oven. This oven has any desired form of door 3, and in the range the even may be in the lower part as here shown or in the upper part, or the lower part 2 may be the broiler. Whether the broiler forms the lower or the upper portion of the housing 2, there is provided what I term an oven burner 3. This burner is sl 1own, suhstantially rectangular in plan view, having it manifold '4 extending in a direction crosswise of the range and its two parallel arms 5 extending parallel the range and its cross arm 6 extending parallel with the arm 4. The two parallel arms 5 are provided on the underside with suitable slits 6 which form burners. In the construct-ion here shown, the part 6 is detachably secured bynmeans of bolts 7 to brackets 8 that 70 extend out from the outer wall 9 of the oven housing.
Located in the open part 1 of the range is what I term a main burner 10. This main burner is fully shown and fully described in my pending application of which this is a continuation in part as hereinbefore stated, and an auxiliary burner 11 here shown in dotted lines connected by a pipe 12 with the main burner, is also shown and described. Therefore this main burner will not be more particularly described than is necessary to understand the present improvement.
The form of main burner here shown is adapted to use a hydrocarbon fuel, and the flow of the fuel to the burner is controlled by a suitable handle 13 in the same manner as in the said copending application. This burner also" has located under it an initial lighting construction 14, for initially heating the said burner in the manner also explained in the copending application and which will be understood by those skilled in this art.
The particular improvement here presented pertains to a lighter 15 that has one end 16' located adjacent the ignition lightin or heating device 14 and its opposite end 1 located adjacent the burner slits 6. It will be 100 observed that this lighter is located under a pipe 18 that serves to connect the oven burner 3 with the main burner 10.. The main burner 10 supplies sufiicient vapor that flows from'the main burner to the oven burner 4 105 and this vaporis controlled by a suitable valve rod 19. i In the present construction the lighter 15 has an upwardly extending communication 20 that enters an opening 21 formed in the 110 said pipe 18. This projection consists as shown, of a tube that extends into the pipe tention is called to a and the inner end of the tube next to the main burner is cut away as shown at 21 that forms a circular portion 22. Passing through this tubular portion 2 is a bolt 23 and the bolt passes through the upper portion of the pipe 18 and receives a suitable nut 24. Attention is directed to the fact that the lighter 15 has its ends 25 flattened, and the flattened ends are slightly open, forming a transverse slit 26 (Figure 5), and the ends of the lighter are provided with a longitudinal slit 17 that connects the slit 26 with the series of transverse extending slits 28 formed on the under side of the lighter. It will be understood, of course, that the vapor from the main burner entering the pipe 18, part of it is deflected by the circular portion 22 downward into the lighter 15 and the'vapor flows in both directions within the lighter, part of it flowing through the slits 26 and 27, adjacent the underside of the main burner and is lighted by the flame from the initial starting device and then the flame flashes back on the under side of the lighter to its end 27 and the flame adjacent to the slits 6, thereby lighting the said oven burner.
For the purpose of protecting the lighter flame, a suitable hood 29 extends below the lighter, thus embracin out thelighter. This is for the purpose of protecting the lighting flame from side drafts causing the lighter to be sure to operate in the manner intended. While this hood may be formed in other ways, in the form here shown, it has its upper ends 30 doubled around the top of the lighter and in that manner it is held. The lighter being intermediately pivoted to the under side of the pipe 18, has a tendency to swing, and for the purpose of holding the same in its proper position, I provide rods 31 which' depend from the underside of the pipe connection. In this manner the position of the lighter is insured so that when it is desired, the flame will be conveyed in the manner previously explained.
The main burner 10 has its housing divided into an upper small burner chamber 32 and a lower large ,vaporchamber 33 by means of a suitable division wall 34, the same as described in the said application. A suitable generator 35 provides the vapor for the lower vapor chamber 33, and the flow of vapor through the conduit or tube 18 is controlled by the said handle. 19 carrying a gear 36 that operates a valve 37 that is adapted to control the opening 38 between the conduit and the vapor chamber 33. At-
post 39, in Fig. 3, against which the valve 37 abuts in its inward position therebylimiting the inward movement of the valve, while its outer movement s limited by the Wall of the opening the flame through 38 against which the valve abuts when it is closed. It will be observed that the tubular portion 20 between the conduit 18 and the lighter 15 is located between the valve 37 and the point where the lighter commupicates with the said burner. Therefore when this valve 37 is closed, vapor cannot reach the said lighter, and it is only when the valve 37 is open to feed the vapor to the oven burner 3 that the vapor passes fromthe conduit to the lighter.
Other features of the parent case which may be herein shown are not described since they are clearly shown and described in the said application.
I desire it understood that the present improvement may be varied by those skilled in the art without departing from the invention so long as the said changes come within a fair interpretation of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hydrocarbon range comprising an open burner portion and an oven, a main burner located in the open burner portion comprising a housing, a generator adapted to supply vapor to the said housing, a burner located in the said oven portion, a conduit passing through the wall nearest to the open portion, one endconnected with the main burner housing and the otherend connected with. the oven burner, and a lighting tubeextending through the said wall having its outer end adjacent the main burner housing, its inner end adjacent the oven burner, and a vapor communication between the said lighter tube and the said conduit, whereby the oven burner may be lighted as described.
2. A hydrocarbon range comprising an open burner-portion and an oven, :1 main burner housing located in the open portion and anoven burner located in the oven portion, comprising a main burner housing divided into a relatively. large lower vapor chamber, a conduit connecting the two said burners, a generator for the main burner, and a lighting tube having one end adjacent the generator and its other end adjacent the oven burner, said lighting tube having an intermediate communication between it and the said conduit whereby the oven burner may be lighted from the said generator.
3. A range housing comprising an open burner part and an oven housing, a main burner located in the open burner part, an oven burner inthe said oven housing, a conduit passing through the adjacent wall of the housing and connecting the said burners,- and a lighting device havin communication with the conduit, said lighter passin through the said housing wall one end 9 the lighter being adjacent the oven and the other end of the lighter adjacent the burner whereby the ovenburner is lighted from the main burner.
4. A hydrocarbon range having an open burner part and an oven housing, a main burner in the open part and an oven burner in the housing, a conduit passing through the adjacent wall of the housing and connecting the said burners, a lighter located below the conduit and having a communication therewith, said lighter passing through the said housing wall, one end of the lighter located adjacent the mainburner and the opposite end, adjacent the oven burner, the parts adapted to operate as described.
5. A' hydrocarbon range comprising an open burner part and an oven housing, an
oven burner in the housing, a main burner the main burner and the opposite end 10- cated adjacent the oven burner, whereby the parts operate as specified.
6. A hydrocarbon range having an open burner part and an oven housing, a'main burner located in the open part and an oven burner located in the oven housing, a conduit passing through the adjacent wall of the housing and connecting said burners, a lighter having communication with the said conduit, the lighter passing through the adjacent wall of the housing, said lighter having at its under side burner openings and its ends provided with burner slits, the parts operating as specified.
7. A hydrocarbon range comprising an open burner part and an oven housing, a. burner in the open part, an oven burner located in said housing, a conduit passing through the adjacent wall of said housing and connecting the said burners, a lighter having communication with the said conduit, the lighter consisting-of a tube having flattened ends, said flattened ends provided with burner slits and the tubular wall of the lighter having burner openings, the lighter passing the said housing wall, one end being adjacent the main burner and its opposite end adjacent the oven burner, whereby the parts operate as described.
'8. A hydrocarbon range comprising an open burner part, an oven housing, a main burner located in the open part and an oven burner located in the housing, a conduit passing through the adjacent wall of said housing and connecting the said burners, a lighter having a tubular communication with the conduit,-the lighter connected with the conduit by means of a screw passing through the lighter through the tubular portion and through the said conduit, the lighter passing through the adjacent wall of'the housing, one end being adjacent the main burner and the opposite end adjacent the oven burner for the purpose set forth;
9. The combination of a range having an open burner .portion and a closed oven adjacent thereto, of a hydrocarbon burner in the open burner portion, a generator for said burner, an oven burner located in the closed oven, and a conduit passing through the adjacent wall of the oven and connectin the said hydrocarbon burner with the oven urner, the parts adapted to operate as described.
10. The combination of a range having at one side an open burner portion and at the opposite side a closed oven ortion, of a hydrocarbon burner located wlthin the open burner portion, a generator for the said burner, the said burner beinv divided into an upper and a lower chamber, the upper chamber serving as a main burner chamber and the lower chamber as a vapor chamber, a burner located in the closed oven, and a conduit having its outer end connected with the said vapor chamber of the hydrocarbon burner, passing through the adjacent wall of the oven and its inner end connected with the said oven burner, the parts-adapted to operate as described.
