THOMAS GORE, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WATER-HEATER Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. 27, 1914..
Application filed March 28, 1914. Serial No. 827,909.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS GORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Water-Heater, of which the foL lowing is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a heater adapted to be assembled with a horizontal boiler of that type which is mounted upon cook stoves and ranges.
The invention aims to provide a heater which may be assembled readily with a boiler of the type described, one object of the invention being to provide a heater in which coils are dispensed with.
The invention aims to provide a heater of the type described which may be manufactured at trifling expense and be assembled with a horizontal range boiler of standard construction without working changes in the existin boiler structure.
It is wit in the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a boiler to which the present invention has been applied; Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the boiler showing the heater applied thereto; Fig. 4 is a fragmental longitudinal section of the heater.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a horizontal tubular boiler of that type which is often applied to ranges and the like, the boiler 1 commonly including headers 2. The boiler 1 and its contents are ordinarily heated from the stove or range, and the present invention aims to provide means whereby the contents of the boiler may be heated when there is no fire in the stove or range.
The invention includes a trough-shaped metallic shield 3 provided along its upper edges with spacing lugs 4 adapted to cooperate with the boiler l to define outlets 5 for the products of combustion along the longitudinal upper edges of the troughshaped shield. lln securing the shield 3 to the boiler 1, the ends of the straps 6 are secured to the lugs 4, the straps passing around the boiler l as will be understood clearly from Fig. 1 of the drawings. The side walls of the shield 3 are each pierced by a plurality of air inlets 7 and adjacent one end of the shield 3 the same is provided with lighting holes 8. 7
Located within the trough-shaped shield 3 and resting upon the bottom thereof is a burner pipe 9 provided with a plurality of combustion orifices 10. Secured to one end of the burner pipe 9 is an elbow 11 attached to the upper end of the mixing pipe 12 carrying at its lower end a funnel 14: or like element, constituting an air inlet. The gas supply pipe is indicated at 15 and discharges into the funnel 14.
In practical operation, the structure forming the subject matter of this application may be assembled with the boiler 1 merely by passing the straps 6- around the boiler.
herefore it is unnecessary to work any changes in existing boiler structures of the type shown in this application. As will be understood readily, the air and gas commingles in the tube 12 and passes into the burner pipe 9, combustion taking place at the openings 10. The burner pipe may be lighted through the opening 8 and the holes 7 in the side walls of the trough-shaped shield 3 constitute secondary air supplies.
'The products of combustion pass away through the cracks or openings defined by the lugs 4, the latter engaging the boiler 1 to space the upper longitudinal edges of the side walls of the shield 3 apart from the boiler 1.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is of few parts and is simple in construction. It may be manufactured at trifling expense and, as hereinbefore stated, may be attached readily to the boiler 1 without changing the structure of the boiler.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a trough-shaped shield provided along its upper edges with spacing lugs; straps having their ends secured to the spacing lugs;
f an:
a burner pipe resting on the bottom of the trough-shaped shield and extending longitudinally thereof; a mixing pipe communicating With one end of the burner pipe and provided with an air inlet; and a source of fuel supply discharging into the air inlet; the shield being provided With ventilating openings in one of its side Walls, and being equipped in one of its side Walls With a lighting hole, the burner pipe being provided with a plurality of combustion orifices disposed longitudinally of the burner pipe.
2. In a device of the class described, a trough shaped shield provided along its longitudinal edges with boiler engaging lugs serving to space the shield from the boiler wherewith the shield is assembled and to define flame outlets, the Walls of the shield being inclined to direct the flame toward the outlets; a burner pipe located Within the shield; and boiler engaging means carried by the shield.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
THOMAS GORE.
