COMBINED CARRYING CASE AND TABLE.

This invention relates to a combined carrying case and table.

An important object of the lnventlon is to provide a carrying case for a typewriter and stationery for use with the typewriter, which case embodies leg structures by means of which the case may be supported for use as a table.

A further and more specific object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which the leg structures provide stationery compartments for the reception of the stationery.

A further object of the invention to provide a device of this character receiving the typewriter carrying case wherein the folding leg structures have .POIUOIIS receiving therebetween the carry ng case of the typewriter and maintaining the same 1 against transverse movement within the case.

A. still further object of the invention is to provide a leg structure of this character which has braces, one of which acts to engage against the typewriter case, when the device is in the transportation assemblage to prevent longitudinal movement of the typewriter case. y 0

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the folding leg structures are so braced when in their table forming positions that there is no tendency of the table to wobble or have any movement which would interfere w1th the operation of the typewriter placed thereon.

These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined carrying case and table in folded position;

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 generally designates a carrying case formed in two sections 11 hinged to one another along one edge, as indicated at 12. The sections 11 are relatively deep and each embody inner and outer end walls 13 and 14, the inner end walls being connected by the hinge 12 and the outer end walls having adjacent their free edges coacting latch elements 15 and 16 for securing the sections in the closed position, The hinge structure permits the outer faces of the inner end walls 13 to flatly abut one another in the open position at which time the bottoms 17 of the sections are aligned to provide a table top. To the side walls 18 of the sections 11 adjacent the outer end walls 14 are secured-pivots 19 upon which are mounted toswin in parallel relatioh to the side walls 18 t e upper'sections 20 of a supporting leg structure. Each su porting leg structure, in addition to t 6 upper section 20, embodies a lower section 21 hinged to the section 20, as at 22. The leg sections 20 and 21 are each of a length approximately e ual to the interior length of the casing sections 11, sothat the sections 21 may be folded upon the outer faces of the sections 20 and both of these sections folded into the associated casing section.

Each upper section 20 embodies side members 23 which are connected at their u per ends to the pivots 19. These side mem ers adjacent their lower ends are connected by a transversely extending brace 24 and adjacent their upper ends by a similar brace 25 which, when the sections are in perpendicular relation to the bottom 17 of the easing sections 11, approximately aligns with the free edge of the outer end wall 14. At the inner faces of the leg sections 20 between the braces 24 and 25, a panel 26 is secured, closing the space between these sections and between the legs. At the outer face thereof, a movable panel 27 is ivoted by pivots 28 engaging the side m em ers 23 immediately above the lower brace 24. To

the inner face of this panel 27 at the upper and lower edges thereof are secured ledges 29. The ledges 29 of one of the panels are connected by bands 30 adapted to engage against the face of typewriter paper and maintain the same in position against the panel 27, while the ledges 29 of the other panel are connected by longitudinally extending partition strips 31, 32 and 33. Between the strips 32 and 33, a compartment for erasers, stamps and similar typewriter accessories is provided and this compartment is closed by a sliding door 34 of any suitable construction. Between the panels 31 and 32, a stop 35 is disposed and bands 36 are passed through the partitions 31 and-32 4 and the stop to provide means for holding between the stop and either of these partitions envelopes or smaller paper accessories. The upper ledge 29 of each panel 27 has a spring catch 36 for coaction with the upper brace 25 of its associated leg section 20.

As a means for holding the leg sections 20 perpendicular to the bottoms 17 of the casing sections 11 and in their supporting position, the side walls 18 of the casing section have each secured thereto at their inner faces and adjacent the inner face of the vertical members 23 of these leg sections, when in their supporting position, a metallic plate 37 and to each leg section is pivoted a lever cam 38, the cam section 39 of which is eccentrically disposed to the pivot 40 of the lever cam. This lever cam has a tapered face 41 which is adapted to engage against the outer edge of the plate 37 as the cam is swung about its pivot and so wedge the outer face of the upper end of the vertical members 23 against the inner face of the end walls 14, so that the leg sections are firmly held against any movement with relation thereto.

As a means for holding the leg sections 20 and 21 against relative movement, when in the supporting position, each leg section 21 is provided in the vertical side member 42 thereof with a vertically extending slot 43 within which a latch 44 is pivoted intermediate its ends. Each leg section 42 is provided with a spring 45 urging the latch to its latching position and a button 46 whereby this latch may be released. Each vertical member 23 of the sections 20 is provided with a corresponding slot 47 bridged by a pin 48.- The catch 44 has a head 49 provided with a cam face 50 for engagement with the pin to wedge the pin toward the upper end of the vertical members 42. Since the catch and pin are arranged at the opposite side of the vertical members 42 and 23 from the pivot 22 between the leg sections, it follows that the spring 45 will always exert pressure to maintain these leg sections in strict align ment and in firm engagement with one another. Each leg section 21 is provided with-a transverse brace 51 which connects the vertical members 42 thereof adjacent their lower ends and other braces 52 which connect the vertical members 42, but are placed at the outer face of the vertical memers, so that they do not interrupt the space therebetween.

In the use of the device, the leg sections, when folded into their respective casing sections, provide between the members 42 of the leg sections 21 a space equal to the width of the typewriter carryin case 53 which is to be accomodated, while t e space between the inner end walls 13 and the braces 51 of the leg sections 21 is equal to the depth of the typewriter carrying case from front to back. Thus, the typewriter carrying case, when placed within one of the sections before they are folded, is held against both longitudinal and transverse movement. The bottom of the typewriter carrying case will rest upon the braces 52 of the leg section 21 associated with the casing section 11 within which it is placed and when the other casing section is moved to the closed position, its braces 52 will engage against the top of the carrying case to prevent movement of the typewriter case transversely of the combined table and carrying case. It will thus be seen that any movement of the typewriter ease within the combined table and carryin case is effectually prevented. In setting 1; 1e device up for use, the combined table and case is opened and the typewriter case removed therefrom. Each leg section is then drawn out of its associated casing section and the leg sections 21 and 23 thereof placed in alignment, so that the catches 44 will maintain them so disposed. The leg sections 20 are then swung until they engage the inner faces of the outer walls 14 of the sections 11 and the lever cams adjusted to lock these leg sections in this position. The entire case is then inverted and placed upon the legs thus provided. These legs are preferably rubber-tipped, as at 54, so as to prevent accidental sliding movements of the table. lVith the table set up, the typewriter is placed thereon and the stationerycompartments provided between the panels 26 and 27 are opened by swinging the panels 27 against the action of the spring catches 36, by means of pulls 55 provided upon the panels 27. Opening movement of the panels 27 is limited at the horizontal position by suitable tether straps 56.

It will be obvious that a structure of this character will provide not only a convenient means for transportation of the typewriter, but will likewise provide at all times a table with which the user is familiar and a means for storing the necessary typewriter accessories. The case 10 will, of course, be provided with carying handles 57 to enable its convenient transportation.

Since the construction hereinbefore set forth is obviously capable of a certain range of change and modification without mate rially departing from the spirit of the invention, I do not limit myself to such specilic structure except as hereinafter claimed.

In a combined carrying case and table for portable typewriters, a casing formed in two similar sections hinged to one another along one edge and swingable to a position where the bottoms of the sections align with one another to form a table surface, a supporting leg structure associated with each section and pivoted thereto adjacent the free wall of the section, each supporting leg structure including upper and lower sections foldahle upon another and into the associated casing section, the leg sections arranged uppermost when the legs are folded into their associated casing section including side members spaced apart a distance equal to the width of the typewriter case to be accommodated and including a cross brace which is spaced from one wall of the casing a distance equal to the depth of the typewriter carrying case from front to back.

In a combined carrying case and table for portable typewriters, a casing formed in two similar sections hinged to one another along one edge and swingable to a position where the bottoms of the sections align with one another to form a table surface, a supporting leg structure associated with each section and pivoted thereto adjacent the free wall of the section, each supporting leg structure including upper and lower sections foldable upon one another and into the associated casing section, the casing when closed providing a space between the leg sections for the reception of a typewriter case, and means associated with one of the leg sections of each leg structure combining therewith to provide a cabinet for the reception of stationery.

4. In a combined carrying case and table for portable typewriters, a casing formed in two similar sections hinged to one another along one edge and swingable to a position where the bottoms of the sections align with one another to form a table surface, a supporting leg structure associated with each section and pivoted thereto adjacent the free wall of the section, each supporting leg structure including upper and lower sections foldable upon one another and into the associated casing section, the casing when closed providing a space between the leg sections for the reception of a typewriter case in cluding s aced transverse braces connecting side memliers of the leg structure, the side members and braces being connected at one side of the leg section by a panel and a second panel hinged to the leg structure at the opposite side thereof and having means for retaining stationery in position thereon.

5. In a combined carrying case and table for portable typewriters, a casing formed in two similar sections hinged to one another along one edge and swingable to a position where the bottoms of the sections align with one another to form a table surface, a supporting leg structure associated with each section and pivoted thereto adjacent the free wall of the section, each supporting leg structure including upper and lower sections foldable upon one another and into the associated casing section, the casing when closed providing a space between the leg sections for the reception of a typewriter case including spaced transverse braces connecting side members of the leg structure, the side members and braces being connected at one side of the leg section by a panel and a second panel hinged to the leg structure at the opposite side thereof and having means for retaining stationery in position thereon, the pivotal connection of the last named panel with the leg structure being at a point adjacent the lowermost transverse race of the section, the u per brace of the section and the free edge 0 the panel having coactin'g elements of a snap fastener.
