POSTING-BOX.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HELMUTH G. Monsoon, a citivcn of the United States, and resident of Baker, in the county of Baker and State of Oregon. haw invented certain new and useful improieulents in PostingBoxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a portable post.- ing box, principally adapted for use by bookkeepcrs and clerks for the storage of statement blanks or other posting mediums, and it has for its general object to produce a telescopic box comprising a pair of sections which, when telcscoped, may be used for storing the blanks, and, when extended, may be used as separate receptacles to fa.- rilitate the shifting of the blanks from one section to the other.

Another object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap and eilicient box of this character which is provided with a means for automatically locking the sections together when they ha \e been closed or telescoped.

To these ends the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings in detail. 1 designates the box as a whole and 2 and 3 the sections thereof which are arranged to telescope one within the other. These s06- tions each include a bottom wall 4-, side walls 5 and 6, and an end wall 7. The outer edges of the side walls 5 and (i are curved as at 8, so that. the side edges of the statement blanks or other posting mediums may be exposed to facilitate their manipulation during the process of posting. The side walls of the section 3 are also upstruck as indicated at 9 to provide a pair of handles for carrying the box when desired.

guides, which are in the form of strips,-and

are bent from the bottom shown, extend from the front end of the section to the rear thereof, and are arranged in parallel and spaced relation to both the bottom and sides of the section. The guides are provided for receiving the ends of the wire loop 12, mounted on the section 2. The wire loop is pirotally secured to the end of the bottom wall 4 by passing the free ends of the wire through the extended or looped portion 13.

The section 2 is arranged to fit within the section 3 and when the sections have been extended and swung apart, as shown in Fig. 1, the wire loop and guides cooperate to form a hinge. The coiiperation of these parts also acts to limit the extendin of the section when the box is in use. W en the sections are closed or in their telcsco ed position, as shown in Fig. 4. it will lie seen that a means is provided for locking the sections in this position. This locking means is brought into action by the relative movement of the sections and comprises a pair of projections or downwardly extending lip portions 14 mounted on the guides 19 and 11, adjacent to the inner free ends thereof.

These projections are arranged in the path of movement of the ends of the wire loop 12, so that when the sections are bein telescopcd. the ends of the loop will spring behind the projections, thus automatically locking the sections together.

Any suitable means may be provided for supporting the box sections after the have been swung apart. For instance, in 4 'g. 1, T have shown a pair of wire legs 15. These logs are provided with offset or angular attaching portions 16. which are mounted within the sockets 17. formed by upstriking a portion of the end walls 7' of the sections, as shown. The legs are pivotally mounted within. these sockets and are arranged so that they may be swung against the outer face of the end walls when the box is collapsed and stored away. i

It may now be seen that when the box sections are telescoped, a single compartment is formed for the storage of statement blanks. Now, when the box is desired to be opened or extended, it is merely nocessar to separate the sections by exerting a llttle force to pull the same apart. This will re lease the lock and permit the wire loop slide in the guides until it reaches the ends thereof. The sections are then swung apart, and when opened or extended, they define separate, angularly related, compartments, the bottom walls of which are disposed in opposite angular planes. The box is designed for properly indexed statement blanks which, when the box is opened, stand in the section 3 and rest against the end wall 7 thereof. When one of the statement sheets has been withdrawn and used, it is then re placed in the section 2, so that at the end of the posting eriod all of the sheets are in section 2. ow, when the operator has finished with the box and the same is to be stored away, he first disengages the brace rod so that the legs may be swung against the outer face of the end walls, and then the sections are telescoped and locked.

When the box is not filled to its capacity I have rov ided a spring clip, as indicated at 21. or engaging the sheets to prevent their displacement within the box. This spring is arranged for slidable movement within a slot 22, located on the section S, so that it may be shifted against one side of the section when not in use.

It is my purpose to make the sections about one and one-half inches wider than the sheets to be used therein to allow for offsetting those accounts which have changed, so as to facilitate the striking of a balance without having to hunt for the sheets offset.

From the foregoing, it is obvious that I have provided a posting box that could be manufactured for a relatively low cost, and sold for a comparatively small amount, and with slight modifications it could be applied to a loo: leaf binder.

It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and, there fore, I do not wish to be limited to such features, except as may be required by the claims.

What I claim is: I

1. A posting box, comprising a pair of box sections, arranged so as to be telescoped one within the other and forming conjointly a single compartment for the storage of statement blanks or other postin mediums, locking means brought into action by the relative movement of the sections to lock the same in their telescoped position and a hinged connection between the sections pen initting the same, when in their extended position, to be disposed in angular relation to each other, to constitute said sections as separate receptacles to facilitate the shifting of the blanks from one receptaclc'to the other.

A posting box, comprising a pair of sections arranged so as to be tclcscoped one within the other, forming conjointly a sin gle compartment for the storage of statement blanks or other posting mediums and cooperating structures for connecting the sections together, said structures constituting a hinge for permitting the sections to be swung apart. when in their extended position and for constituting a lock for locking the sections against relative movement when the sections are telcscoped and means detachably mounted on said sections for supporting the same when swung apart.
