IMPROVEMENT IN JEWELRVt-PINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,057, dated July 27, 1875; application filed December 19, 1874.
To all whom it o nag concern.-
Be it known'that I, ISAAC B. ABRAHAMS, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Jewelry-Pins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a plan view, part sectional, of my device. Figs. 2 and 3 show different modifications of the same, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views.
This invention has relation to pins for brooches and other like ornaments of personal wear.
The object of the improvement is to provide a simple and effective means for producing'the amount of spring necessary for preserving the engagement of the pin with its end hook,and, while allowing it requisite vibration, to hold it against undue lateral displacement. To this end the nature of the invention consists in combining, with a pin hinged to the lower end of a metallic pin-post, a hollow slotted cap which is adapted to be passed over the said pin, and to receive within it the lower part of the said pin-post, whereby the pin is allowed to vibrate freely through the said slot in the same plane, is held against undue vibration, and a bearing-point is afiorded at the ends of the slot, resting upon which the said pin is endowed with a sutlicient spring to maintain its engagement with the end hook or catch, all as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, A-designates a metallic post of suitable thickness, to the lower end of which is hinged a pin, 0, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This post may be of the form shown in Fig. 2, or of that delineated in Fig. 3, but in either case the free ends thereof are of the same shape-that is, their lateral edges diverge outwardly for a purpose hereinafter described. They are also preferably of soft metal. B designates a hollow cap terminating in a rounded top, through which is diametrically made a slot, 0. this cap is adapted to receive within it the end i of plate A, and when this end is of the form'shown in Fig. 3 I propose to have it made with longitudinal grooves 71, within which the said plate is adapted to be received, and by which it is prevented from axial vibration. The pin 0 is inserted through slot 0 of cap B, and is thrust through the same until post A is received within the said cap, as shown in Fig. 1. In this position post A will be transverse to slot 0, and the pin will be allowed to vibrate freely through the said slot in a plane vertical to that of the pin-post. The ends l of slot 0 afford bearing-points upon which and against which the pins 0 are pressed when they are engaged in their catches thus givingthem a degree of spring adequate to maintaining their engagement therewith. Post A may be secured in place by a drop of solder, or the sides of the cap may be swayed up against it, but I do not propose to coniine myself to either method. The end 9' of post A is fan-shaped, and is adapted to be screwed into ascreW-threaded perforation in the back plate of the brooch, by being pressed in a clamp, which, while causing it to assume cylindrical shape, at the same time impressed a thread upon it corresponding with that of the perforation in the back plate.
