This invention relates to filling replenishing looms and more particularly to a filling end clearer for controlling the filling end leading from the ejected filling carrier that it may not be drawn. into the shed during weaving.
It is now the common practice to provide filling replenishing looms with some character of: controlling means for preventing the filling end leading from theejected filling carrier to the shuttle from being drawn into the shed, and in some cases the filling end between the ejected filling carrier and shuttle has been clamped, so that as the lay went back after replenishment, the filling end would be withdrawn from the shuttle. Such filling end controlling 1neans,however necessitates a number ot'parts at the replenishing side of the loom and complicates the loom structure, and one of the objects of the present invention is to provide a filling end clearer of simple construction which will be effective in operation to secure the desired results.

An important feature of the present invention therefore consists of a filling end clearer wherein the laterally eXtendinga-rm or thread engaging member is yieldingly mounted on its support for movement'horizontally or substantially so, bothin a frontwaxd and backward directionfso that in case a filling carrier becomes trapped as above suggested, the laterz'illy extending arm may yield on its pivotal supportwithout breakage.

The loom frame 1 may be of usual construction and in the present instance has mounted thereon the hopper stand 2 which supports the rotary hopper 3 in which filling carriers tare mounted for movement to transferring position, as usual.
Extending from the hopper stand 2 is the stud or dead shaft- 5 on which is mounted the transt'errer 6 having the downwardly extending arm 7 to which is pivotally connected the dog 8 adaptedto he engagedby a hunter 9 carried by the lay to effect replenishment of filling. The dog 8 is under the control of a train of mechanism for indicatingwhen replenishment should be effected, but since the details of such mechanism form nopart of the present invention, further description thereof is unnecessary.
Secured to the stud or dead shaft 5 isthe downwardly extending arm 10. which forms a support for the filling end clearer. The lower portion of the arm 10 is provided with a slot 11 in which is adjustably mountedthe pin or support 12 which may be clamped in its vertically adjusted position by means of the clamping nuts 13 threaded to the support 12. The support 12 carries the slide supporting arm 14 which may be secured to the support 12 by means of a set screw 15. Extending laterally from the arm 14 is the bolt 16 which passes through a slot 17 at right angles to the slot 11, and formed in the bracket 18, constituting appropriate guideways for the slide 19.
The bracket 18 is provided with bearings 20 and 21, through the latter of which the slide 19 extends, and frontward of the hearing 21 the slide is provided with a stop shoulder 22. Extending frontwardly from the slide 19 is a pin 23, and between the hearings 20 and 21 is a spring 23* normally urging the slide 19 rearwardly, in which po sition it is limited by the stop 22. The slide 19 extends rearwardly of the bracket 18 and has pivotally mounted on its rearwardly extending portion the laterally and downwardly extending filling engaging arni.
In the present instance of the invention, the rear portion of the slide 1!) is bifurcated. as indicated at 2 1, and in the bifurcated end portion of the slide is a block pivotally connected at 26 to the slide 15). The block .25 carries the laterally and downwardly extending filling engaging arm 97 which may be appropriate secured to the block 25 by the portion 28 which extends into a slot in the block and has a down-turned end, as indicated at 9.9. The block 25 aiiords a convenient and practical means for supporting the laterally and downwardly extending filling engaging arm 27, but this construc tion may be varied without departing from the true scope of the actual invention.
Extending frontwardly from the pivotal support 26, the block 25 has a projection 30, to the front end portion of which at 31. is secured one end of a spring 32, the other end of the spring being connected at with the slide 19. In order to protect the parts 01. the spring and block, as hereinbei ore dc scribed, the frontwardly extending portion 30 of the block is contained within the bifurcation or space 24ioit the slide, and similarly, the spring 32 is therein contained. From the construction thus :lt'ar described it will be apparent that the laterally and downwardly extending filling engaging arm 27 is free for swinging movement, both in a frontward and rearward direction under the controlling influence of the spring which by frontward stress normally maintains the filling engaging arm 27 in its filling engaging position, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3.
In some "uses it is desirable to provide the lower portion of the shuttle box adjacent the opening formed therein for the passage of the ejected filling carrier. with a series of teeth 35, whereby the filling end leading from the shuttle eye may engage such teeth upon ejection of the filling carrier, but these n'ray not always be necessary although they are herein shown.
The lay oil is provided with the usual shuttle box 37 having the opening 38 for the passage oi the ejected filling carrier, and the teeth 35, when used, may he formed on a plate 39, and secured to the lower portion 01. the shuttle box lrontward of the pa go through which the ejected lilling carrier passes. The lay may he provided with a bobbin chute 1-0, as usual, for directing the filling carriers dmvnwardly and :lrontwardly.
From the construction described i it will be apparent that the laterally and dowi'iwardly extending lilling engaging arni E57 is normally held in its filling cngaging position. as indicated in Fig. l, by means of the spring of, and yet such lilling engagingarin 527 may yield horizontally either it'rontwarth ly or reamuirdly as indicated by full. and dotted lines in Fig.

Should the tilling ends a loop about the laterally and downwardly inclined filling engaging arm 52?. they will gradually more towards the end of the downwardly extending arm 27 owing to the vibration ol the loom during wearing, and finally drop from the end of said arm out oi the moring parts of the looni or danger zone and consequently not be carried into the shed. Such release of the looped filling ends from the downwardly and laterally extending filling engaging arm is auton'iatic and due in a measure at least to the vibrations of the loom All ill)

1. In a filling replenishing loom, the combition of the lay, a shuttle box having an opening for the discharge of a filling carrier, and a filling end clearer comprising, a slide mounted frontward of the lay, a laterally extending arm pivot-ally mounted on "the slide and a spring for normally holding the pivoted arm in position to engage the filling between the ejected filling carrier and shuttle with freedom for swinging movement of the arm on its pivotal connection with the slide.
In a filling replenishing loom, the com bination of the lay, a shuttle box having an opening for the discharge of a filling carrier, a slide mounted frontwa-rd of the lay, a laterally extending arm pivotally connected to the rear portion of the slide for pern'iissive swinging movement relative thereto frontwardly and rearwardly, and a spring between the slide and laterally ex tending arm normally acting to hold the a rin in position to engage the filling between the ejected carrier and shuttle and yieldable to ermit rearward swinging movement of the arm should a filling carrier be trapped between it and the lay as the lay goes back.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the lay, a shuttle box having an opening for the discharge of a filling carrier, a slide mounted frontward of the lay, a spring normally urging the slide rearwardly, a laterally extending arm pivotally connected to the rear portion of the slide for permissive swinging movement relative thereto frontwardly and rearwardly, and a spring between the slide and laterally extending arm normally acting to hold the arm in position to engage the filling between the (tier-ted earrie' and shuttle and yieldable to permit rearward swinging movement of the arm should a filling carrier be trapped between it and the lay as the lay goes back.

In a filling replenishihng loom, the combination of the lay, a shuttle box having an opening for the discharge of a filling carrier, a guideway at the front of the loom, a slide mounted in said guideway for movement towards and from the front of the loom, a block pivotally mounted on the slide and having a part extending frontwardly from the pivotal mounting, a. filling engaging arm carried by said block and extending laterally therefrom to engage the filling be tween the ejected carrier and shuttle, and a spring connected to said part of the block and to the slide and normally acting to hold the arm in position to engage the filling.
